notes

After spending most of the first decade of her career as a child star successfully performing live all over the Philippines, Amapola released an album of contemporary songs called "Songs and Amapola". The album then became a summary of the most exciting songs of her recording career in the Philippines. Now, the album is back, re-mastered and re-titled to 'You Don't Know Me'. This new edition album has now become a collectors favorite and includes her top three #1 hits ("Never," "Secret Love," "Sinner or Saint") and a host of works from the decade's best songwriters: Little Things Mean A Lot EDITH LINDEMAN, CARL STUTZ; Secret Love - SAMMY FAIN, PAUL FRANCIS WEBSTER; One Love - RICHARD CARPENTER, JOHN L. BETTIS; If You Love Me Really Love Me - HYMNE À L`AMOUR Edith Piaf; Sinner or Saint - IRVING GORDON; I'll Walk Alone - JULE STYNE, SAMMY CAHN; Loss Of Love - HENRY MANCINI, BOB MERRILL to name a few. These are the Amapola's songs that hit the Top Ten Charts in her native country garnering her Asia's Grammy Award equivalent twice.

Amapola established herself as a super talent in her country, receiving accolades for her excellence as a television host, recording artist, as a motion picture actress (playing feature and lead roles plus others as a child star, & singing the musical scores for many others), as an instrumentalist (playing 8 musical instruments & excelling as a classic pianist), & as a TV & Radio personality - hosting "Amapola Presents" on KEMO-TV 20 in San Francisco, California. Twice awarded the "AWIT AWARDS" (the Asian equivalent of the US Grammy awards) for "Best Female Vocalist", other major awards were bestowed on her, notably the National Press "Hall of Fame" Award.

"Amapola Presents Show" still holds the record as the longest running Local Magazine Variety Show outside of Hollywood. Directed by Dirk Dirksen and syndicated in the West Coast, it was slotted at prime time on Saturday evenings & replayed on Sunday afternoons for seven straight years in the San Francisco Bay Area then syndicated and replayed in among others: Sacramento, Salinas and San Diego.

Amapola appeared in the Venetian Room of the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco headlining an SRO concert fund-raiser for then California Governor Jerry Brown and merited a five minute ovation and a Plaque of Honor from Governor Gerry Brown and Browns for Brown organization.

She recorded a single released by Warner/Electra/Asylum (WEA) of the Philippines) & maintained Top 10 airplay for several weeks, ultimately rising to the #2. The following year Amapola recorded a live album during her one-woman concert at the Manila Hotel - the first live in concert album recording ever produced in the Philippines.

The Live at The Manila Hotel show was reprised on Amapola's American West Coast tour and further featured onboard some of the world's finest cruise ships including Royal Viking Sun (Maiden Voyage), Royal Viking Star, MS Song OF Flower & MS Hanseatic during its world cruise.

  • Amapola mesmerizes
    author: Gertrude (and Selena) Lacson

We bought one of her videos, read her books and listened to her CDs and she did not fail to mesmerize. We are very proud of her because we come from the same country. She left the country during the height of her golden career and I Gertrude, remember it. Now my daughter is a big fan. I introduced her to the old nostalgia songs here in this album and she immediately became a fan. Amapola's singing has no bounds, not age nor time. She is ageless. Sgd. Gertrude Lacson

  • A lifetime fan of Amapola
    author: Chakti Pemeran Shaktimali

I bought this album before it was enhanced or digitized. I hear it now and this new edition has cemented my impression of Amapola as a balladeer. I have also witnessed some of her electrifying live shows when she rocks comparable to any of the Britneys or Shakiras of the world. It is a shame that wonderful artists like this are not heard or seen worldwide. Give Amapola the big break right now and I guarantee she can still give you a run for your money.

Very romantics and easy songs. My favorites! I am very impressed! I was talking or writing with a Real Artist and Talent of Phillipines. My God! Wonderful my friend.

  • This CD album is a classic and definitely worthy of five stars if not ten.

Amapola brings a depth-of-feeling to the lyrics of this love songs collection. The arrangements are lush and gives you a glimpse of how talented Filipino musicians really are. The score is smooth and romantic yet not syrupy. I played the CD more than four times and it did not interfere with my conversations, my chores around the house, and it even helped me relax in between. Amapola's gentle voice gives a respectful rendition to these beautiful golden standards sung by many seasoned veterans before her, and yet, her interpretations lull you almost to believe that these songs were her own. This CD album is a classic and definitely worthy of five stars if not ten.

  • i love your voice, I'm listening it over and over.

    author: George Skelton

This album is a true revival of one of the most dynamic eras of our lives, the 1950's. Amapola’s elegant voice has crafted some of the most beautiful songs ever written: Loss of Love, Never, You Don’t Know Me, Sinner or Saint and many more songs still as vital in this industry that a lot of production people have ignored for several years, until Barbra Streisand, Patty Austin, Natalie Cole or even Norah Jones paid attention again to these wonderful but ignored classic standards. Amapola has brought some of these gems back with this album. I must say that her voice is just one of the most elegant as you could expect from a talented singer. The innocence of fairy-tale romance is captured in the song “Never”, “Face to Face” and Secret Love while the magic and wonder of passionate love is expressed in "Sinner or Saint." Yet, in a song such as "You Don’t Know Me," Amapola’s vocals expresses that the love of your life may not even know you exist! In the refreshing “Loss of Love”, love can run its course, and there is a time for it to end. With the selection “I’ll Walk Alone” the pain and regret of remembering a past love that didn't work out is expressed here while "Songs” by composer George Canseco, one of my favorites on the album, speaks of a lost love one has lost to the heavens. “Face to Face” which includes some beautiful strings made me weak in my knees. Amapola has a voice which can communicate all aspects of love in her vocal expression and feeling. This CD will always remind us that even as musical eras change, and primes have passed, some beautiful songs and beautiful singers will always stay beautiful.

  • Enchanting, haunting and luminous
author: Everrett Spaulding of "Music Today"

Each track is a superb selection of haunting melodies from a golden era. The love songs baby boomers fell in love with like Sinner or Saint and You Don't Know Me are absolutely marvelous. Beautiful songs like Loss Of Love brings me back to the time when movie themes were haunting and you leave the theater humming to yourself (sadly missing from today's film themes). Amapola's artful performance is one of the more subtle and quietly seductive of the batch of independent female artists I have been recently listening to lately. The best track for my ears is Face To Face, a luminous arrangement textured with sensational strings.
