(The Band) Alfonzo's Master Plan was born on a dreary September Day on Tobacco Road, amid a wasteland of empty beer cans, mud, and drunk grad students. The occasion was the Duke basketball ticket campout, a festive moment in the otherwise dreary existence of student life in Durham, North Carolina. I had my guitar out and my friends and I were performing an inebriated rehash of some Everlast song, much to the amusement of our imbibing companions, when the Muse came to us, in the form of a bee. But this was not just any bee, this was Alphonzo.
He kept buzzing and dive-bombing our beers, and at first we were disconcerted, but finally we accepted him as one of the gang. He was hip, easy going, and he loved getting wasted. But more than that, he had a plan. A master plan. He inspired us. Next thing you know we had a band, named for that very bee that came to us like a seraphim from the heavens to save our musical souls. That band was Jeff Bradford (songwriting, vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and whistling), Mike McGrath (bass and charisma), Matt Wolf (creative influence), and Aaron Futch (drums). This cd, recorded mostly in a basement in north carolina, does not capture but merely represents and pays tribute to the whimsical sound carried down to us on the wings of the brew-guzzling Bee-muse--it is but a flawed human attempt to replicate Alfonso's unattainable, aesthetically utopian master plan. Alfonzo, we thank you.
