An unorthodox yet enjoyable ride
When I first listened to the couple of samples, I said that my daughter would love the distortion guitar sounds on this CD. After getting it into the CD player and listening to it in it's entirety, it is so much more than just random notes of distortion through different amps. There are very interesting percussion backdrops that serve as the blank canvas with which the Ampguy paints his artistic creations. With no concern for beat, time signatures, rythyms, or even the proper key at times, you would think that this is pure jibberish recorded for the sake of recording different sounds.
Then you play it again and realize there is a definite creation in the works here. It is almost if he is pouring his innermost thoughts onto the canvas backdrop of the percussion. This one definitely requires more than one listen to appreciate, and there's even some "comic" relief of sorts thrown in on tracks 21 and 23.
You will enjoy it!!

just listen to the clips of ted matsamura aka ampguy and you'll hear a man who doesn't adhere to the limitations of tonal centers, tuning or even playing in time.
his phrasing reaches well over the bar line almost as if he's playfully tweaking the knobs on effect pedals while "playing" to a karaoke track and choking down a burning hot microwave entree at the same time...question is-swanson or lean cuisine?
these tracks conjure up many visions that imply a true sense of comic relief that brought me to tears as i laughed joyfully. this should be shared with friends
i firmly believe that satriani and vai will recognize the genius and come forth inviting him to be a featured guest on the next g3 tour.
then the world will know...

I Can't Believe What I'm Hearing
As a guitarist with 35 years of music writing and playing experience (mostly avant-garde), I find this CD to be particularly humbling and unsettling as it has forced me to entirely re-think my approach to my instrument and to my music. Ted Matsumura has singlehandedly put me back to ground zero, but with the impetus to renew, re-invigorate and re-invent myself. I wish I had heard this music decades ago. This, though, is the beauty of music; no matter how good one thinks one is, one can always learn. From this CD, I've learned a bunch - about music and about myself - and I am about to take the musical journey of a lifetime. In a musical sense, I've been awakened to discover my own re-birth.

Simply brilliant! Just brilliant!
Recall the work of painter Norman Rockwell as the backing/rhythm - practical, understated, mainstream, and safe. Now recall the work of architect Gaudy - unconventional, experimental, daring, and stupefying - as the melody/lead voicing. Mix it together and the result is a compilation of music which simultaneously plays one opposite against another - the familiar against the abstract.
After many listens, I felt as if I had made a breakthrough, a discovery. And what a beautiful moment that was. I got it! TedM'gets it! You should, too.

TedM is pure genius - Coltrane and Hendrix come immediately to mind.
What can I say? Finally, a guitarist who isn't shackled by the whims of a Britney-buying public or record-label crap. This guy is completely unfiltered and unfazed - a tour de force of stream-of-consciousness musicality and a sonic historian (listen to his encyclopedic nods to the masters)whose own pallet extends beyond the known spectrum. Sadly, we may never see another TedM. Gladly, he is here and now. Hail TedM!

Ted Matsumura breaks all the rules and tills new and fertile ground. Compelling
Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane....Ted Matsumura. An aural tapestry of off-beat phrasing and surging dissonance. The listener is confronted with ideas and juxtapositions perhaps not previously encountered. The ensuing mayhem, affrontive and grating at first, blossoms mirthfully with each repeated indulgence. Yes, an acquired taste as nothing this wildly sophisticated and complex can be digested in a single sitting.

I Thought all of the Guitar Heroes were Dead. Read on......
Just who is this Ampguy? Who is Ted Matsumura? As far as I can tell, he's some obscure guy who happens to be spoolin' out reams of the headiest music of our times.
While his music is, on many levels, different from Hendrix', his impact on the art form of guitar music is every bit as novel and monumental. Matsumura is a tsunami poised to break in the world of music available on the internet. He may never become a household name, but he is already a legend to me.
