The Metaphors are a unique instrumental group gathered to extend the sax oboe and wind synth playing of Andy Mackay of Roxy Music.
Falling into no obvious existing genres this post - rock combo crosses experimental electronic ambient classical jazz and R&B.
This Album ( The Metaphors first recorded project ) consists of arrangements and variations of pop, film and show tunes, searching for the dark heart of the contemporary city. Recorded at Real World studios near Bristol in the west of England and at The Hospital studio in London's Covent Garden .
The musicians are:
Andy Mackay - sax / oboe
Paul Thompson - drums
Julia Thornton - harp / percussion
TJ Allen -guitar / laptop
Hazel Mills -piano / vocals
This eclectic line-up perfectly reflects Andy Mackay's lifetime musical odyssey and obsessions from rock 'n 'roll sax and electronic experimentation to classical and film music. He was listening to all this long before he co-founded Roxy Music with Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno .Added to this is the experience of decades of performance and an awareness of newer directions in music from contemporary bands including Battles, Sigur Ros , Godspeed You ! Black Emperor Ryuichi Sakamoto and the Portico Quartet.
