Album Notes

Liner Notes

Tucked away in a loft, in the small community of Sand City, California, lies Real to Reel Recording Studio. Here, owner/producer Gary Souza devoted a year of his time to the recording of this 20-song CD dedicated to the music of Ray Charles.

Souza, a founding member and bass player for the legendary Broadway Blues Band for 16 years, has been recording local artists and writing songs for the past 7 years. A chance meeting at the Monterey Blues Festival in 2004 with vocalist Katie Birdsall gave Souza the inspiration that put this tribute album in motion.

This gutsy venture brought together the talents of 48 musicians, the majority from the Monterey Pennsula area, including 9 lead vocalists, 8 horn players, 4 drummers, 5 keyboard players, and 10 background vocalists. Souza even composed an original gospel song especially for the project.

The artists that appear on this album came together with one purpose in mind: to show their appreciation and respect for Ray, and to lay down a few soulful riffs in memory of this masterful artist.

This is a labor of love with a whole lotta help from a whole lotta friends, all ... For the Love of Ray

-Stephen L. Vagnini

Live Concert of the Ray Cd at CSUMB 4/29/06

This CD is so great, I didn't think it could be done as a live show ever! Was I wrong!! Those guys kicked serious butt at the World Theater (CSUMB) and left no doubt as to this combination of local Monterey musicians' having the real deal when it comes to Brother Ray and his music. I can't wait to see them at this year's Monterey Blues Festival in June. Get your CD now!

I grew up in Monterey and this takes me home!!!!!
author: Norvill Clark
I grew up on the Monterey Peninsula and as a teenager worked at or attended both the Monterey Jazz Festival and later, the Monterey Blues Festival. My friends and I always used the Monterey Jazz Festival as an unofficial family and neighborhood reunion. This CD takes me back to those special times and visits. This is like all the jam sessions after the shows...the one's you sneak into or can attend with special invite only...Truely Monterey musicans at their collective best...One of the reasons Monterey will always be one of the greatest places to live and enjoy music in the U.S. Way to go Katie....
