Album Notes

Amy Cook recently relocated to Texas from Los Angeles, where she was one of the early singer-songwriters on the Hotel Café scene. Amy’s 2005 release on Marfa Records, The Bunkhouse Recordings, began a new chapter for Amy. After moving from California, she wrote and recorded a raw, stripped down acoustic record, one that would define and refine her style, and that critics called buoyant and delightful.

Up next – two December 2006 releases: Amy’s next full-length record, The Sky Observer’s Guide, recorded by esteemed producer, Jamie Myerson, and a reissue of The Bunkhouse Recordings with 2 new live tracks. In February of 2007 a highly-anticipated collaboration between Myerson and Cook, an EP for the project Fine Day for Flying will be released.

The upcoming Sky Observer’s Guide showcases Amy’s brilliant band, with Nina Singh (David Garza, Future Clouds and Radar) on drums, Brad Rice (Son Volt, Tift Merritt) on guitar, and Bobby Daniel on bass. The compelling production by Jamie Myerson is simultaneously lush and gritty, mysterious and honest. As opposed to overtaking the songs, in Myerson’s capable hands, the production allows the lyrics and melodies to shine. Tosca performs a memorable string arrangement written by Stephen Barber for the song “Feathers to a Crown.”

The record was made in collaboration with visual artist Amy Adler, who photographed and subsequently drew portraits of Cook as she composed songs through the summer of 2006. The record release and art opening will be celebrated at a release party at the Aspen Museum of Art on December 15th, 2006.

Fantastic album
author: Jake McCumber
Amy's music, including this album, has really captured me and I can't listen to it enough. I get lost in the beautiful poetry of her songs everytime I listen. The music and her voice that present the songs make me feel like I can stretch out under the wide West Texas sky no matter where I am or what I am doing. I definitely recommend this album and if you get a chance to watch her live don't miss it.

Perfection Unplugged!
author: Karen Staley
The clarity of her voice and the smoothness of the guitar against the backdrop of a night sky and the hum of our favorite Texas kazoo players (the crickets)takes me back to when we spent fall evenings around the camp fire without having to brave the bugs. Thanks for an incredible cd.

I like this cd a lot. The accoustic guitar, the sound of the crickets, the lyrics and voice of Amy Cook are a perfect mix.
