notes

With the 2002 release of her CD Mr. Heart, Amy Fairchild has come into her own. Critical acclaim gathered fast for this self-released effort. According to Steve Morse of the Boston Globe, Fairchild is "...on the verge of big things." In the words of rock critic Dave Marsh, "If there still was a recording industry, this would come out on a major label...and would be such a big hit that you'd be sick of her by now. Not many people make records this good". Album Network says, "Reminiscent of Sheryl Crow, Fairchild effortlessly delivers natural lyrics and organic vocals while her band keeps it rocking. This stuff is really cool." Seth Rogovoy, in the Dec 6th Berkshire Eagle picked Mr. Heart as one of his top 10 CD Releases for 2002. "Falling Down" from Mr. Heart won Grand Prize in the Pop Category of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and was then named the $20,000.00 - Maxell Song of the Year, and In 2003, "Renee" took an unprecedented second straight Grand Prize in that contest's Pop Category, announced on 1/15/04 and in 2004, Mr. Heart (the song) was a finalist in the Folk Category. "Tuesday" a song about Sept 11th won Grand Prize in the Billboard Songwriting Competition in the Country/Folk Category in 2002 and "Renee" took 2nd Place in the Pop Category in 2003. Song placements include "Humble Pie", which was used in an episode of Dawson's Creek and "Beautiful Secret", placed in the national touring company production of Spiderman Live (the show played in 45 major US markets). "Beautiful Secret" was also used in CBS's new hit Joan of Arcadia. Amy was nominated for two 2003 Boston Music Awards, Best Female Vocalist and Best Female Singer/Songwriter.

Fairchild's musical career began in Northampton, MA with the release of her first CD "She's Not Herself" which was voted "Album of the Year" by several local papers. She moved to New York City in 1998 and immediately began performing and filling clubs throughout the city. In May of 2001, she won the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Songwriting Competition, joining a list of winners that includes Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin. She was also the NYC 1999 Lilith Fair Talent Search Winner, and performed at the Jones Beach stop of the tour. In addition to the Lilith Fair headliners, she has shared the stage with such diverse artists as Pat Benatar, The Bacon Brothers, Freedy Johnston, Ben Folds, Joan Osborne and Ellis Paul. Sensitive introspection, a sharp melodic radar, rock and roll's rebellious energy, and an intuitive feel for the understated power of an acoustic guitar and a good lyric all inform her music and distinguish Amy as a dynamic performer. The Berkshire Eagle also picked her performance at Club Helsinki in Gt. Barrington as one of the Top 10 Concerts in 2002 saying "Fairchild combines the literate intimacy of a new-folk singer-songwriter, the unerring pop-rock instincts of a Sheryl Crow, and the moves of a rock goddess." (others on the list included Springsteen, McCartney, Dylan and James Taylor with the Boston Pops!)

Mr Heart was produced by Boston's multi-instrumentalist/producer Adam Steinberg (Patty Griffith, Dixie Chicks, Todd Thibaud) and features Graham Maby (Joe Jackson, Natalie Merchant) and Sebastian Steinberg (Soul Coughing, Neil Finn) on bass, Gary Burke (Joe Jackson, Bob Dylan) on drums and Steinberg on electric guitar, keyboards and more. She continues to play out live both solo and with a band (including legendary drummer Dave Mattacks) to support Mr. Heart.

A live cd, Amy Fairchild Live was released on February 10th, 2004 and a brand new studio cd is in the works slated for release in the fall of 2005. Cut and paste the URL below for more details on how to become involved in the making of the new cd!

  • Wow! What Melodic Gifts
    author: Frisco

Tune after beautifully written tune. Ms. Fairchild delivers great melodies and lyrics. From the pure pop of the first four songs to the balladry of Tuesday, this one is "five stars" on virtuallly every track. There's good reason she has won so many songwriting awards, but you won't find out on the radio, so give this a try.

  • If Shawn Colvin is big, why isn't Amy bigger??

The songs make you look forward to the hooks and keeps you replaying the music. In some ways, and this isn't negative, you feel as if you've heard the songs before, but you realize they're hers and her take on this pop genre. I look forward to seeing her again live after only a tease at Toad in Cambridge recently. Keep it up.

  • A must in a serious CD-collection

Gets better every time I listen to it. When she sings "I see you" in "Home", I wish that it is me!

  • Another great CD!

I've been listening to Amy Fairchild since she played and lived in my neck of the woods. I was hooked on her voice and sound the first time I heard her perform back in the early/mid 90's. She has only gotten better. Like most of her music, this CD grows on you the more you listen to it. I loved it the first time through, and each time I like it more.

  • This CD is riding solo in my car stereo for a while.

Like a personal discovery of some new exotic spice for the soul, Amy Fairchild's Mr. Heart is an example of American songcrafting at its' very finest. Between her solid musicianship, ability to command lyrics with unquestionable authority and her distinctively unique reactive vocal techniques, Amy Fairchild's Mr. Heart is the consummate CD experience. Bravissima!

  • Amongst the best pop singwriting out there
    author: David

Mr. Heart is an earnest album, full of private moments and thoughtful moods. By no means is it just a ruminative jaunt, though--this album is fun, and it's gorgeous. The recording is just a hair below big label standard, but to most listeners, you'd never know. The arrangements are lush, and I would listen to Amy sing the alphabet all day long with breathy vocals like Mr. Heart's. It's criminal this album isn't on everyone's radio.

Sweet cd, well written, beautifully crafted. Not a bad tract on the cd. If you are a Sheryl Crow fan you will love this artist. Genuine talent. Can't wait for the next one.

  • I am no music critic, but I really love this record!
    author: Chad Johnson

Mr. Heart is an album that gets better with play. After my first few run throughs, Renee and Mr. Heart struck me as solid, catchy, heart-felt tunes. But the more I listen to it, the more the subtle tracks on the album get my attention. Amy displays a great deal of talent and touch. She is a women who has found and is living her calling.

  • Amy Fairchild... a force to be reckoned with!
    author: Chapman James

Covering the expressions of folk artists has been my passion for some decades now. What constitutes a 'folk' recording to me however is the contemporary subject matter the artist uses and the freshness or realness of the production rather than effects beyond reason that are usually there to hide some weakness in the performer. Amy Fairchild has no weakness in her music and she not only meets my appraisal of a true 'Folk' artist but adds a new gable to the structure. 'Falling Down' is a force to be reckoned with... I dare anyone to try istening to it without moving. You'll surprise yourself when you catch a head bobbing, a shoulder swaying or a heel tapping. 'Tuesday' has to be one of the top five 9-11 related tunes from an eye witness I have ever heard. Her underlying acoustics are brilliant with a traditional feel throughout but what makes her unique is how well studied her work comes across. She blends a very personal style to her compositions. She says something... she means many things... then there is this wonderful voice delivering it which if all the tracks were sliced away could be imparted with only one instrument if need be at anytime. An artist of profound substance. I hope she finds great management & remains independent forever as she is most deserving of ALL the fruits of her non-mainstreamed labors...
