Album Notes

For over 15 years fans have been begging Anastasia for a cd of cover tunes. People LOVE the way she can take a song, breathe some of her magic into it & create something unique to make it her own in a way that most have never witnessed before. “Slip Beneath the Covers” Volume 1 is the first in a series of cover CDs due to be released by the artist from 2007-2009.
“I wanted to begin the series on a slightly romantic note, so I compiled a list of some of my favorite songs & the rest seemed to come naturally.”

People from all over the world travel to the lush, tropical island of Maui to frolic in this South Pacific paradise, not knowing what to expect when they stop off for some live music & one of those “blue foo-foo drinks with the umbrella” at one of the local night clubs. Much to their amazement, they come to find that they too have just discovered one of the best kept secrets of the Hawaiian islands!

Anastasia performed with her band, The VooDoo Suns for over 7 years & also juggled 3 duet projects, each with their own special attributes. Three guys, three different instruments, three different genres of music to explore with each of them. R&R, R&B, Jazz, Country, Originals & beyond. Her voice is so versatile that it’s hard to put her into just one category. “I wanted to perform all kinds of music & I wanted to take everything back to the essential basics. There is something pure & authentic in music performed with just a voice, guitar & percussion or a piano or keyboard to accompany it.
That thought was the inspiration behind my duet projects. It’s been so well received & so many people wanted to take home a part of what they’d experienced that making a series of cover CDs was the logical next step.”

Anastasia moved to Maui & formed the highly-acclaimed alternative rock band “The Missionaries”. They extensively toured the Hawaiian club circuit for 7 years. In that time they won recognition from MTV’s independent band contest & received mention in “Vanity Fair” magazine in an interview with screenwriter Joe Estherhaus. Appearing on the “Tonight Show” with Jay Leno, Dennis Rodman talked about the time that he & Eddie Vedder of “Pearl Jam” joined the Missionaries on stage at a Lahaina night club. Rodman wrote about that experience in his book, “As Bad As I Want To Be”.
In the summer of 1996 the Missionaries recorded & produced an all-original CD. That year they performed on stage with “Hootie & the Blowfish”. Anastasia landed in singer’s heaven when she was invited on stage to sing a cappella with “Ladysmith Black Mombazo”. From 1998 to the present, she has continued her session work and has recorded several independent CD projects. She’s opened for a diverse range of shows including “YES” and Randy Travis..

I saw Ms Gilliam play at the Four Seasons in Maui, and bought the CD directly from her after the performance. These songs are recorded the way I like to hear great pure singers like Diana Krall and LeAnn Rimes - just a voice and one instrumentalist. Anastasia Gilliam's singing is every bit as strong and as soulful as Rimes, Amy Winehouse, or even Aretha. No synths, no double-tracking, no sampling, no drums. Not too many artists still perform this way, because these days not too many "singers" can actually sing. I can't decide which cut I like best, maybe the Marvin Gaye double-header near the end. Serve your guests a nice wine and spin this CD.
