An emotionally raw CD that captivates.
author: suzanne elizabeth
A.Starr's American Doll is a spare, raw, and ultimately stunning recording that captures her yearning for truth in the shadow of grief over what she has lost. Though she has added flute and cello to two tracks, it is just Andi and her guitar throughout the album, showcasing her aching voice and urgent plea for us to "go inside" (Turn this Ship).
Her album opens with the simultaneously soothing yet heartbreaking Drop Your Stone, a cry over the loss of someone close. American Doll, the title track, speaks directly and passionately to the split of head and heart in our culture; we glorify T&A, perfection thru surgery, and pre-packaged Pop to the complete neglect of our inner lives.
Andi Starr's songs are quiet screams from the underworld (listen to Persephone's Cry or Take Me Down) reminding us of the rumblings in the ravaged earth that we must not ignore. Through the darkness and grief she sings of comes glimpses of light, of rebirth, and of comfort (Bloom, Real Love).
Listen to this CD to cry with Andi over our loss of innocence in a culture that has neglected its heart and is filled with broken families and relationships.

A beautiful light in the darkness.
author: Jeff Myers
This heartbreaking and beautiful album illuminates the great promise and possibility that music has to touch the heart and feed the soul. Quiet, simple and spare, American Doll is an album of haunting melodies and aching voices -- a brilliant compilation of loss and grief and hope that cannot help but bring tears to your eyes. Partly a story of personal loss and tragedy, (Umbrella, Persephone's Cry) part social commentary (American Doll, Turn this Ship) and part hope, (Real Love) American Doll is an album that resonates with the deepest parts of the soul. Compared to the over-packaged, hyper-produced, mass-marketed, image-driven drivel that dominates popular music today, Andi Starr and her album American Doll are a beautiful light in the darkness.
