Album Notes

Andy Gibson is an Auckland based singer/songwriter of depth and sincerity. His voice is compelling and beautiful, and has a distinctively New Zealand character. In 2002, he released the EP 'Side//A', which was followed in 2007 by the full length album "Behind the I".

Andy Gibson’s music blends melodic pop/rock with strands of electronica and folk. Influences include Bright Eyes, Radiohead and Jeff Buckley. Lyrically, Andy’s songs tackle human issues, addressing both personal and global struggles.

The five songs on 'Side//A' showcase Andy's diversity as both songwriter and producer. 'Childhood' is lushly arrranged with strings and operatic female voices (all three of Andy's sisters feature on this track) while 'Dive' is a mellow surf song featuring slide guitar and percussion. Award winning jazz pianist Charmaine Ford is featured on 'Song for Scandinavian Travellers' while 'In a Meniscus' with its double-reversed vocal line is a nod to Radiohead.

Andy Gibson began writing songs as a child, growing up in Auckland, New Zealand. He is a traveller, having lived in Paris and Boston, Thailand and India and with his time in New Zealand spread between Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin. He is now working on a Masters degree in Sociolinguistics, studying the topic of singing accents in New Zealand.
