Album Notes

ANISA ANGAROLA and VALARIE KING developed one of the finest classical guitar-flute duos in the country. Working together while studying music at the University of Southern California, they have performed and recorded together for over a decade.
Pastorale is a selection of their favorites. It contains the premiere recording of Air by leading composer Ian Krouse as well as the premiere of his large work, Da Chara, commissioned by the duo. Da Chara has now become an important piece in the flute - guitar repertoire and a popular concert piece.

ANISA ANGAROLA is one of the twelve guitar soloists selected nationwide to perform in the historic 1980 master class given by Andres Segovia. She is also the founder of the renowned Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, recording and touring with the group for ten years to international acclaim. She is not only a three time recipient of the California Arts Council Grant, but also a prizewinner with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet in the 35th Concert Artists Guild International Competition, New York.
She has concertized throughout North America, France, Holland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Orient, including appearances at Wigmore Hall in London, Carnegie Hall NY, Teatro Nacional in Madrid, Zurich Toenhalle, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Mozart Festival, over a hundred concerts in Mexico, including the International Cervantino Festival at the invitation of the government of Mexico.
She has been heard on national and international radio-television broadcasts including ZDF Mainz, Germany.
Anisa has also concertized with maestro Angel Romero and with the Romeros Quartet.

In 1991, she founded the Angarola Guitar Quartet combining a group of international guitarists to commission new repertoire for guitar ensemble. This group has been critically acclaimed by the Los Angeles Times and hailed for its precision and its exciting performances by the European press.

Angarola has long been a fan of Ireland and its musical tradition. Her Irish Airs and Dances was on the ballot of the 1992 Grammy awards. With ten-times All-Ireland Champion, fiddler Seamus Connolly, Angarola recorded in Dublin for the Radio Telefis Eireann, now part of the RTE archives.

Angarola has applied her talents as producer, arranger, and performer on over a dozen recordings.

VALARIE KING is one of the most sought after flutists in the United States. A graduate of University of Southern California with a B.A. in Music, Valarie is equally at home in recording studios or live stage performances. Her ability to adapt to various musical styles is in great demand.

Listening Versatility

Pastorale holds particular value for me because of the varied listening contexts in which I find it to be ideal. Quiet, light, lovely dinner music. Mello music for mediation. Beautiful and engaging duo artistry for engaged headphone listening. You will be richer for having this music in your home.

I loved this CD! So romantic! You've got to buy it!
author: Andrea Amador
The big treat here are the two Irish pieces by Ian Krouse and the Zambra written by Angarola and King. Fireworks! Can they play! And they are so tight, the best flute guitar duo I have heard. The rest of the CD is made of lovely soothing music like the Satie pieces, the Carolan pieces which I have heard on harp before but I love Angarola's arrangement. It's a great mix of music not a single boring track here. Well worth my money. What makes this CD so great is the playing is balanced, both players are virtuosos. The guitar has parts that rival the flute so it is an equal pairing which for me makes the music so interesting. It's also beautifully played, very sensitive, romantic. I'm happy with my purchase, in fact, I've had it in my car stereo forever and it makes driving a lot more pleasant.
