notes

Angelique's star quality was evident at age four, when she made her musical debut during a class assembly in her birthplace of Alameda, California. Angelique quickly developed a taste for being in the spotlight and performed solo in several church and school talent shows throughout her school years. "I was such a diva-in-training," she says with a grin. "I loved being the center of attention."

With a dream of pursuing a career as a performer along with a desire to leave her small hometown, Angelique graduated high school at age 15 and with stars in her eyes, headed to Hollywood. Upon arrival, Angelique bluffed her way onto the set of TV series FAME and secured a job as a singer-musician for several episodes while attending college full-time. Working with seasoned professionals, (including a well-known pop star), Angelique quickly learned the importance of training, hard work and determination.

After her stint on FAME ended, Angelique was signed to Los Angeles independent Lotion Records where she achieved local success with the disco single Rocket In The Pocket. Following Lotion's demise, Angelique joined producer Edmund Sylvers' ill-fated girl-group The Nutbuddies. When the group disbanded, Angelique returned to college and graduated soon after with degrees in French and Spanish.

Not one to readily accept defeat, Angelique used this as an opportunity to hone her skills and soon caught the attention of a Motown producer who offered her a contract. When her boyfriend at the time recommended against it, she turned him down.

With no contract and ultimately no boyfriend, Angelique sought refuge in her music. As therapy, Angelique began composing songs that expressed her emotions and discovered songwriting was just what she needed to heal her wounds.

This life changing "no money, no honey, risk-taking and truth-telling stage" helped Angelique to focus on what she really wanted to do: write and produce her own material, which is aptly demonstrated on her current CD Angelique.

Angelique's emotional and raw lyrics mesh well with her sensual voice and escort the listener into an innovative, soul stirring and spiritually eargasmic world of ecstasy.

As one can tell, Angelique's musical influences are varied; Bob Marley and Elton John discovered from her next door neighbors' garage sale finds as well as her mother's vintage R&B soul, sister Denise's Santana and Stevie Wonder, daddy's jazz and later Edith Piaf, Josephine Baker and Julio Iglesias from her language studies.

Angelique's warmth, effervescent personality in addition to her electrifying performances translate so well on the stage that even skeptics have been known to boogie in their seats. Furthermore, Angelique's international appeal and unparalleled musicianship make her one of the most exciting performers in the business. "I love performing and connecting with audiences," says Angelique. "Ever since I was a four year old diva-in-training."

Swinging from neo-soul through a diverse net of global influences, this project shows another layer of heart and class every time you spin it. She's clearly centered in classic r'n'b, and her songwriting shows humor and muscle even with Brazilian and techno dabblings. But she doesn't stop there. Her brainy cover of Lennon/McCartney's "All I Gotta Do" is riveting, and message songs like "Hollywood" and "The Box" compliments the romantic stories with some philosophic salt. I've seen Angelique deliver these songs live. She is not only a consummate performer, but one who has transformed her survival tales into resiliant epiphanies. Kelly Rowland and the like will probably go on unemployment leave when Angelique gets on their stage.
