Album Notes

Much of this recording was conceived as a twenty- year update and progression of the Duo's masterpiece, CHIAROSCURO, released on Windham Hill Records in 1985, which amazingly, sold over 65,000 copies worldwide over a 5 year period. As we have both learned so much about life and music since then, we hoped to extrapolate on what became a lot of peoples' favorite instrumental recording. We wanted to make a musical "message from the frontier" that would reflect our present emotional, intellectual and spritual selves.

Again, we have purposely created highly structured works, which would be difficult ( but not impossible ) to perform live. Again, we tried not to get too hung up on perfection but to communicate a vibe. And again, we wanted to showcase the glorious sound of our string instruments playing music in a space "bug enough to do it in."

Excellent! Music that pulls us in!
author: Brian
Long-time collaborators Mike Marshall and Darol Anger have again created a treasure unsurpassed by any form or genre of music ever established. Woodshop was largely conceived and recorded by the musicians in homage to their multi-gold selling album Chiaroscuro from 1985. They blend their diverse repertoire of bluegrass, blues, jazz, celtic, and African, Latin and Asian-inspired music into something incredibly new and original. The tunes themselves are difficult to put into words, but the quick, repetitive motifs from "Peter Pan" and the sweet, somber melodies of "Borealis" are sure to please anyone looking for densely beautiful music. Every piece offers a pleasant and rewarding experience, and the artists' solos are fresh and new each time I hear them. I only wish I could play like these guys! But, after playing together for over 30 years now, its understandable that this little digital album holds so much talent. Highly recommended.
