Song in the Water is one of those albums you can listen to over and over again. It’s hard to put your finger on what it is exactly- it’s unlike anything you’ve ever heard- but there’s definitely something about it that’s oddly familiar. Something unusual, yet universal. There’s a cool fluid vibe that runs through the whole album, just under the surface, beckoning the listener.
As one fan put it, “I get chills every time I hear Ecotone” (track 4 on the album). First the guitar work knocks you over, and then you’re lost in the lyrics.
Listen. Listen. Listen.
This time use your rabbit ears.
Look. Look. Look.
Look on through your owl eyes.
It’s easy to see you’re listening to a true artist who has a surprising way with words, a relaxed singing voice that comes off as easily as breathing, and guitar skills that catch and keep the attention of any instrumentalist.
You have to wonder, though, who is this artist? Who is this singer? Where on earth does she come up with these lyrics and this unusual guitar style? And what is it about that voice? I mean, who is she?
Her lyrics hint at an answer, or at least offer a peek at how her writerly mind works. Midway through the song Ecotone she sings,
I might live just an inch out in front of me
Or I might dream way off in infinity
Where I can look, where I can see
Out where the rock faces whisper their ancientness
Where my vision’s been greened by spring
Out where I can hear the notes of the ecotone
Where I can press my ear right down
Down to the seam
Still, she is a bit of a mystery. Of course something is revealed in the lyrics. Something is given away in the sound of her voice. If you listen, understanding can be found in the storyline that runs through each song. Once you hear her you’re instantly connected, and right away you know that this is a person who pays attention. This is a person who sees under water. This is a person who can find a whole song on a butterfly wing.
