NOTES: REACH IN, REACH OUT, REACH HEAVENWARD...COLOR YOUR LIFE!...THAT VOICE SOUNDS LIKE AN AN ANGEL...
Hi and welcome to my page! With all the wonderful artists here on cdbaby, I'm honored that you'd take the time to visit.
I have many favorite female artists who have beautifully influenced my music, from folk pop, to R&B, jazz, blues and hard rock. Producing this work has been an adventure into uncharted territory as I'd only been playing the guitar for a few years and have absolutely no theory knowledge. Male musicians often ogle my fingers as I play my songs at open mic nites. They can't believe I've only been playing the guitar for a few years.
My latest release explores many of these varied inluences, from the folky, plaintive "I Want You" to the sassy, jazzy, exuberant "Moment by Moment". My Native American influence shines on "Here Am I" and then I switch gears again to Celine Dion sophistication on my jazz remake of "Amazing Grace". Pop/Folk sensibilities delight with the memories of falling in love on the uplifting "So Happy". I wrap my eclectic set with the climactic, commanding finale, "Stop, Look and Listen", reminiscent of Pat Benatar and Anne Wislon of Heart. There's variety, something for everyone in the family, from pop & rock for the kids to adult contemporary for the adults
This cd was made with lots of love in the hopes you are lifted to a higher place and where you can get away from this crazy world for awhile!
My prayer is that the variety, lovely harmonies and the emotive guitar stylings of my guitarist and co-producer, Chris Durante takes you to new musical heights.
I've always felt my calling to be a musical visionary and crusader who champions the underdog! Having transcended a painful childhood and abusive, failed marriage, I approach life with passion, staunch determination and candor. I used to be passive and fearful, yet intensely creative. My dreams included becoming a rockstar, fashion designer and writer. Childhood personal tragedies couldn't kill my dreams for long, for I enrolled in a local community college to break out of my shell.
And break out I did, for I attacked my singing aspirations with a passionate vengeance.
"You're never to old to follow your dreams", I joke to my non artist friends who teasingly say I'm too old to get signed. I snort, "They're just jealous!"
In 1990, Mariah Carey debuted and her inspiring testimony of persistence and faith in the face of great odds compelled me to do the same. I infused my bi-racial & bi-cultural influences into my music to carve a niche in my career.
My favorite showcases were performing at the renowned Bitter End and Kenny's Castaways in Manhatten, The Stone Pony and The Saint, Asbury Park, NJ and being the monthly featured artist at Border's Books. The Saint and Brighton Bar, Long Branch, NJ, were the first venues where I got my first breaks.
My following grew while playing at Starbuck's Sea Girt, NJ for two years where my favorite moments involved the children who watched me perform.
Performing at Harry's Roadhouse, Asbury Park in Sept of 2003 to raise funds for the rape care program of "180-Turning Lives Around" was a meaningful show for me. The purpose of "The Creation of Eve-Original Women of Rock" was to raise funds for a cause I strongly believe in. Along with performing, advocating broken people in crisis is my passion. I also enjoyed jamming out with New Jersey's other many fine Jazz and Blues artists at several Clearwater Festivals.
I released my first collaborative effort, "I'll Fly High" in 1996, co-written with several talented songwriting partners. Chris Dargis, music writer of BUDO magazine wrote, Anita's not looking for celebrity status if it means sacrificing what's truly important, educating younger people through music...Many of the tunes are inviting due to the awesome musicians involved...filled with love and relaxation of a higher being. Fun stuff!" Asbury Park Press writes, "She is most inspired with her religious songs. "He Believed in Me" has a jazzy pop sound reminiscent of Swing Out Sister.
Disappointed and frustrated that yet another male guitarist quit on me, I pondered how I could grow as an artist. My prayers were answered through my friendship with a gifted musician who urged me to challenge myelf and learn guitar. He taught me a few basic chords. I bought a jazz chord book and starting writing songs for my second project, "Asbury Park Angel", released in 2001
I was deliriously delighted with my newfound ability to compose songs with an "out of the box" mentality. I grabbed the reins of my passionate creativity and merged my thought-provoking lyrics with unconventional chords. I approach songwriting in much the same way I paint. Primary colors and basic chords are boring, so I experiment with all kinds hues and weird guitar voicings until I get the right feel-an awesome song!
(Here comes the drama-LOL)!I wield my exquisite Taylor guitar as my tool of emancipation. Compelling lyrics start to flow from my pen and my crystalline, 4-octaved soprano voice joins with in. When the song is finsihed and after I've gotten it properly arranged and it flows, I hope a conviction stirs your soul and reaches into your being, compelling you to face your demons and celebrate your victories. I believe this is my mission, to be a songwriter who connects with you and helps you to be transformed into a beautiful new person.
The "Rag" music magazine paints me as the quirky, vintage-attired songstress with the girlish lilt who laughs at calamity with the panache of a seasoned, gallant warrior, (big words for a small man, LOL again!)
"I am a small warrior, but with God in me, I am larger than life!"
"Enjoy life in the present, live life to the fullest and be spontaneous. This is the spice of life."
My favorite times are just taking off in my car and driving to the boardwalk on a crisp, sunny day. I pack my guitar and white calico with plans to delight the passerbys with an impromptu concert at the Belmar boardwalk. I wear my sunny smile that competes with the sun while I briskly strum "Dusty Sneakers" for the dancing little kids.
Through it all, both the good and bad times, I aspire to write and perform songs that are positive and timeless. I hope to be a trendsetter, as an artist and fashion designer, whether people like my hybrid works or not. I will always maintain my positive attitude which I hope is infectious and I encourage you to Jump into the River of Life with Passion!
