ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Alluring. Sophisticated. Spirited. Timeless. The new CD by acclaimed artist, Anjani is a mesmerizing collection of original songs with elements of acoustic, smooth jazz, and world music. The exquisite dance through passionate love and human frailty, to a state of inner peace and acceptance, is beautifully expressed in this long awaited release.

Anjani portrays affairs of the heart with vision and integrity, in this intimate, revealing, self-produced work. She generates an aura of compassion through astute lyrics that are convincing and uplifting, never banal or predictable. The ultimate reward of this project is a soothing, compelling affirmation of unconditional love.

What sets Anjani apart from other vocally blessed singer/songwriters, is her mastery of the keyboard. In the words of one reviewer, "The arrangement on this song (Ain't Foolin' No One) is so subtle and well filled out, it is a while before you realize it is only voice and piano, with no other accompanying instruments."

From "Here and Now," an acoustic soundtrack for life, to the classic style torch ballad, "Over You," to the ki ho'alu (slack key guitar) sound of "Kanaloa," a duet featuring Henry Kapono; every tune is an unexpectedly refreshing offering that reaches far beyond ordinary pop fare. Anjani's compositions contain many references to nature, reflecting her upbringing in the tropical, verdant, multi-cultured paradise of Hawaii.

A world class rhythm section provides sensitive embellishment to these highly crafted songs. Distinguished fusion jazz virtuoso, Frank Gambale plays acoustic guitar on five cuts, most notably the latin tinged samba, "Ties That Bind."

Leonard Cohen calls Anjani, "...a world class singer with an unforgettable voice." Anjani has performed with Cohen since 1984, when she sang background vocals on his hallmark tune, Hallelujah. Their most recent collaboration is Blue Alert (2006 Columbia Records, produced by Leonard Cohen), ten bittersweet lovesongs featuring Cohen's lyrics with music, arrangements and vocals by Anjani.

Voice like silk that takes you to another world
Anjani has a rare quality to her voice. It is smooth as silk and carries you to another world. The simplicity of the arrangements is superb. There is a lot of space in this album which makes listening, particularly through headphones, a joy. It's not full of instruments or sound just for the sake of it. Every note has its place and can almost be enjoyed individually. And without a wall of sound that beautiful voice has the space to shine through. I've rated it 4 stars because I think Anjani's top work can be heard on Leonard Cohen's 'Dear Heather' album. But I do hope a new album in her own name will appear soon.

Anjani can sing me to sleep any night...
I love Anjani's warm, seductive voice. She's a fine jazz pianist in addition to being a great singer and composer.

Fantastic. Just gotta love that that soothing velvety voice. Love your other albums too especially "blue alert", can't wait for the next album. Cheers

Anjani
Anjani or Angel ... they are the same, if angels were to sing this is what they would sound like. I have several albums by Anjani and each is refreshing in all aspects.

Angel by your side
Wow, that's nice and feels good to know that others believe in angels. Moved and your voice is sweet and relaxing to listen to. I hope everything is well. Thanks for the beautiful music. I feel better already.
Take care and God Bless you.

"Angel By Your Side" is the defining cut on this jazz/world music-influenced debut. "Angel" opens on a seductive guitar arpeggio with which Anjani's fingers beckon you into her world--a candlelit place where her soulful voice takes you on a journey from LA to Okinawa to Hawaii and back. The only question is whether you'll ever want to leave that world.

warm, uplifting...
This CD marks the debut of Hawai'i-born, half-Okinawan singer/songwriter, Anjani. Her songs reflect elements of pop, folk and world music. What makes her music special is the warm, uplifting quality of her lyrics. Of the tracks included, this writer's personal favorite is the lovely “Kanaloa”, a duet with Henry Kapono, sung in Hawaiian. In the fitting words of supporter Leonard Cohen, Anjani's music is "exotic, dreamy and hypnotic." Words of wisdom.

She's in serious danger of becoming the queen of my heart.
Anjani is the voice that hits you in the middle of Leonard Cohen's, “First We Take Manhattan” and on many other delights from “I'm Your Man.” But now she turns up with a solo album which is very much her own work. The voice is clear, seductive and upfront and her album is beautifully played and recorded. The addition of Okinawan and Hawaiian influences moves it just enough away from the mainstream to make it all the more interesting, and she's no slouch as a songwriter either. She's in serious danger of becoming the queen of my heart.

Finally we have the release of the self-titled CD from Anjani, a Hawaii-born, half-Okinawan singer/songwriter. Not only is this a great CD, it is unique. Spiritual expression blended with Hawaiian soul and backed up with smooth jazz harmonies serve as a background for the sensuous lilting melodies performed by Anjani with her smoky voice. Superbly crafted easy listening music. Especially interesting lyrics drawn from her own life-story, and heartfelt emotions are easily conveyed by Anjani's singing style, a rich blend of honey and rose. Diverse feelings from the musical styles of "Quite Storm", "Hawaiian Breeze" and light jazz, caress the ear and soothe the soul.
Among all the music cuts, the ones to pay attention to are, "here and now", (not a coincidence that it is the first on the CD), "angel by your side", "queen of your heart", and "ties that bind". Put it on, relax in an easy chair and float with the music and lyrics.

Anjani, is a beautiful calling card...
The first locally released album by Hawaii expatriate Anjani, is a beautiful calling card. All the songs are new; she wrote most and co-wrote the others. They create a musical portrait that opens with singles bar patter (“I’m a Virgo moon with a Leo heart”) then gels as a memorable chronicle of life and love. Anjani is more cerebral and less poppy than Na leo but should appeal to the more sophisticated members of Na Leo’s huge fan base.
The arrangements are smooth and at times sound almost New Age, but have a fullness usually missing in local synth-based pop efforts. “Kanaloa,” sung as a duet with Henry Kapono while Ozzie Kotani plays guitar, adds a sense of her island roots. So do the Hawaiian and Okinawan lyrics she slips in elsewhere. “Anjani” is a soothing musical experience.
