Seattle's Anna Coogan discovered the folk traditions of the American West after ending a ten-year relationship with opera. A few months after leaving the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, she took to writing songs to fill the resultant musical void. Described in the Portland, Oregon Willamette Weekly as "sweet and clear voiced with a stunning range," Anna fronts North19 with an honesty and courage that bellies her petite stature.
While cutting her teeth in Seattle's smoky open mic scene, Anna met banjo and guitar journeyman Travis Beard. He drew upon his twenty years of varied experience on the Pacific Northwest music circuit to enhance Anna's tunes with intriguing and original instrumentation, drawing from traditional bluegrass, blues, and rock.
A freak accident at the DMV introduced Anna to bassist Kevin Burkett, who had recently arrived in Seattle via St. Louis, MO. His fifteen years of duty in bands ranging from 60's cover music to modern-Americana acoustic-rock helped the newly monikered "North19" increase the focus of their music and begin to truly drive the project forward.
North19 keeps an intense performing schedule in the area, playing venues from Portland to Vancouver, BC. In their time together, they have captivated audiences at the Seattle Folklife Festival, Portland's MusicFest NW, and numerous other festivals. They are continuing to build a regular following playing at venues throughout the region, with plans to tour other parts of the country in the near future.
Audiences have loved the blend of haunting ballads, original bluegrass, political folk tunes, and countrified pop songs. Their dedication to their craft, coupled with live performances at every opportunity, is rapidly establishing North19 as a presence in the NorthWest alt-country scene.

Now is the time...

Here's why now is the time to fall in love with Anna
Coogan and her music:
[I'll try to be brief]
Because there are years and years of excellent music
ahead of her. This means that you should begin enjoying
her songs now, near the beginning; that way, you derive
the most ("most" being a synonym for "longest" in this
context) enjoyment out of being a fan. If you wait,
you're only [unnecessarily] delaying gratification,
which doesn't make a whole lot of sense if you think
about it for a minute.
Because she's still [relatively] down to earth (though
admittedly this is subject to debate among people that
know Anna personally). For example, if you [hypothetically
speaking] bump into her at Mae's Phinney Ridge Cafe in
Seattle and say something like "Aren't You Anna Coogan?",
she's entirely likely to acknowledge, and even possibly
be flattered by, your recognition that she's who she is.
This won't always be true (I guarantee this).
Because she possesses this rare combination of both
talent and humility, something that's increasingly
difficult to find in these days of attention-grabbing
narcissistic culture.
All I've said thus far is true: she's young, extremely
talented, has a wonderful voice with which she uses to
sing hauntingly beautiful melodies. This is true now
and will be true for many years to come.
Check out Lonesome Cowboy Lullaby.
Then become a fan of Anna Coogan.

Outstanding debut/demo EP, it captures the fire and passion of Anna's live performance and deftly showcases her touching style of balladry. Standouts include the title track and Drop A Line; the complete package is a worthwhile visit with a talented and promising musical original.
