Album Notes

Anthony has proven to be a protean musician and composer since he began to write music as a child. His tastes are extensive and often undefinable – a fact that is well-established when one listens to this, his debut solo album. Obsessed with the epic, the antiquated, the old-fashioned and outdated, his sound harks back to a time that has all but been thrown under the Bus of Oblivion. Not only does the album stand athwart the very temporal vehicle that runs over the treasures of the past, but it also seeks to force its transmission into reverse and the throttle wide open.

Successfully commandeering the Time Bus, Anthony has not neglected to point out points of interest as he rockets backwards through the annals of musical destiny. Through the crackle of the overhead public address system he can be heard saying such things as, "On your right is some Hip-Hop; and to your left, a bit of discarded progressive Jazz…" Through it all his voice is unwaveringly calm, completely oblivious to the panicked shrieks that his passengers let out as they barrel backwards at break-neck speed.

If Anthony's vision and eclecticism were not enough to keep his audience listening, the caliber of his many sidemen would be enough alone. Featured are such local phenoms as: Ben Johnson, Mat Wennergren (of Shades of Gray), Forest & Phaust (of Sinthesis), Jes Luckett (of The Sister Wives), Liz Woolley, Natasha McIntosh (of The Soul Survivors, a.k.a. The Soulistics), et multi alii. In all, this is an accessible album, but it will make you think. But never fear: though you may feel at times that Anthony could have done with some psychotherapy in his youth, your inner musical recluse will thank you for paying a visit to reminisce and play a hand of cribbage.

Enormous Contrast

This album is an enormous contrast to what we tend to hear these days. In a world of hyper-processed, hyper-compressed, every-musical-space-filled-all-the-time-at-all-frequencies sonic mayhem, Anthony has crafted a fine, honest record with plenty of space for all the sonic elements. This is a recording that is meant to be taken in as a piece of art, and not simply used to compete with all the background noise around the listener. Cool arrangements, solid production values, and some great bits of whimsy (The Hot Dog You Gave Me, anyone?) make this album a great one to pick up. Cheers!

Anthony Phan is a genius of some sort. This album is intelligent and primal at the same time – to me that means exciting! Click on track 2 and feel the vibes baby! After several listens I keep coming back and finding something new. I dig this for sure.
