Album Notes

What is/who are Aporia? Well, they’re a band of course and they play music; write their own songs, haul their own stuff, book their own gigs--all that jazz. Their sound has been described as anything from the wildly imaginative "acid folk-country" to the more appropriate "soulful acoustic rock." They love to play, create and perform. They've just released their first studio album, "Bare Bones," which was recorded at the Big Rick Studios in Rosholt, Wisconsin and engineered by Dave Kruger (with re-mastering help from the Rev. Eddie Danger). It has 10 original songs, ranging in style from folk to reggae to rock and something in between. Lead vocals and drums are provided by Emily Mills and acoustic guitar and vocals come from Justin Woodward. Morey Burnard rounds out the sound on bass guitar. They all live in Madison, Wisconsin. Their live shows brim with energy, humor and passion, captivating audiences all over the city at venues like the High Noon Saloon, the King Club, Café

This recording had me curious. I have occasionally kept an eye on Justin Woodward since I noted him to the fok lib index 5 years ago. His demo was raw, but showed energy, potential, and most of all....a brass pair. I have never been sure about the Aporia project, but was surprised by the quality of the tunes therin. I look forward to their growth, and some day getting the T-shirt Justin promised me.

Once in a great while you run across a band that defies labels. some friends of mine discovered this dilemma while trying to promote their band the jive roster. one of the definitions they came up with was “nerd groove-rock,” which i thought captured their sound perfectly. they, however, realized that it’s hard as hell to sell yourself that way, and continued their quest for marketability. by turns rowdy and subdued, aporia’s latest release bare bones is such an album. constantly catching you off guard, aporia amps things up and then takes it easy with the very next breath. by turns defiant and yearning, complex and straight-up, silly and so so serious, this band creates a fresh and vibrant vibe lacking in many major releases these days. emily mills (vocals & percussion) reminds me of billie holliday with her smooth delivery and rich timbre, even on the high notes. with an enviable range and haunting phrasing, mills hooks up an i.v. of emotion and mainlines it straight into you
