John Book, Music For America

A reggae band deserving of international success
Bob Marley may have had a mission when he traveled around the world touring and sharing his music with people. I think he would be fairly impressed by how widespread reggae music is today, and how deep it has affected the musicians who believe in the sounds that originated from Jamaica. One band that does this with honor are a group from the Solomon Islands who call themselves Apprentice.

Together We Stand (Sharpnote) could easily be filled with Steel Pulse-type politicism, but instead the group call for a plea for the people of the Solomon Islands, and really all island nations, to stand up and be strong during these times of struggle and strife. The type of reggae they play is very pop-friendly, fans of Big Mountain will find something to appreciate about Apprentice, and the vocals of Nelson Mamae could become the next Maxi Priest if he keeps on singing as good as he does. It is reggae with a good vibe, although in "Mother Earth" they do offer a message for people to respect the planet and each other. When they reach the appropriately titled "Farewell", it feels as if these guys have become instant brethren, and you want to bring them in and share your food, talk story, and play music until 4 in the morning.

Their style is quite nice, although I would have liked to have heard a wide range of styles on keyboards than the ones they use throughout the CD. A Hammond B-3 or a Fender Rhodes would have been nice way to compliment their musicianship, and pehraps it is something they can experiment with for their next CD. As it stands, Together We Stand honors the positive messages in reggae that Marley held so close to him before he died 25 years ago, and in truth honors the roots reggae movement that millions of people still hold close to their hearts. The group have a growing following throughout the Pacific Rim, and with enough of a push they could easily gain international success.
