THE APPROACH are an avant-rock trio from Vancouver, Canada that consists of Marty Rollins (The Red Light Sting, Closed Caption Radio), Steve Elliott and Daryl Kirkham (both of the Donkey Engine). Their combination of economy, dynamics, and drive, create equations that wind their way to satisfying, moody, and powerful conclusions. Ignoring stylistic orthodoxy in favour of innovation, their compositions are often pithy and elegant.
Playing together since 2002, the group’s three members take the standard guitar-bass-drums format into an unconventional realm and are garnering fast acclaim for their incendiary live shows. And, with the addition of strings, samples, and a discriminate use of keys, they have created seamless recorded works that present a refreshing tech-rock artistry.
Their first studio album “Wings of Monarchs” released by Flyer Records topped Canadian university stations such as CITR and CHSR for numerous weeks. Their much anticipated second album “Safe as Houses”, which features the vocal stylings of Gregory Adams (The Red Light Sting) and Lyn Heinemann (Portico) was released in November 2006. Three songs from the album have recently been licensed for national broadcast on the CBC series “Make Some Noise”.

A Great Album!

I check these guys out whenever they play in Vancouver, but the CD is so much more expansive. It flows really well through a number of different moods and vibes, from hard edged punk rock to more atmospheric, mellow instrumental numbers. I don't know if it's a concept album but it has that kind of variety. Really good!

Safe as Houses will put a spell on you.

The Approach’s new album “Safe as Houses” has an oddly enjoyable depressing effect. With a unique sound that is hypnotizing and moody, you will be drawn into their mysterious, majestic kingdom. A perfect contrast of loud and quiet songs, “Safe as Houses” will either rouse you up or calm you down. It is a thoughtful and delightfully dark CD packed with instrumentals and emotion.
