APRIL ANDERSON
A finalist of Acoustic Magazines singer – songwriter competition 2009, an appearance at The Cambridge Folk Festival, BBC Radio play and live dates all around the UK, including opening for Baskery; a pretty grand arrival into the acoustic scene from this highly talented newcomer.
April Anderson is a multi instrumentalist and a unique and refreshingly original singer-songwriter, who has just released her debut album “Swings and Roundabouts” on Acoustic Clock Records. She is the sole writer, arranger and producer of these lyrically quirky, well crafted songs and her music has been described as an idiosyncratic blend of contemporary folk, tinged with jazz. This is sophisticated multi- genre music and she has been compared to Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, John Martyn, and Nick Drake, yet she is still just April!
April sings, plays all the guitars, flute and piano on the album and has quite clearly mastered them all. Her guitar style reflects her interest in non-conventional tuning and finger picking, while the vocal harmonies are sumptuous, sometimes ethereal; at times they possess a distinctive dissonant, edgy quality to them which is echoed in her arrangements. Dig a little deeper and you realize that she has spent many years honing these skills as a session player, whose work has been vast and varied and includes, TV, Radio, West End and an Award Winning Off-Broadway show.
With tremendous playing from her backing band, featuring an array of instruments such as Hammer Dulcimer, Recorders, Cello, exotic percussion, and some truly inspirational fiddle playing from Gerry Diver (Lisa Knapp’s producer) “Swings and Roundabouts” is an exciting and moving experience.
“This music is fresh, intriguing and beguiling; a new direction the acoustic scene has been waiting for”
