Album Notes

When asked what kind of music she writes, April simply says, "It's vocally driven acoustic rock." And when asked who she sounds like she has this to say; "I know a lot of artists say this, but I don't feel that it can be compared to any other music." And, apparently, listeners feel the same way about her unique and powerful sound. Jason Thompson of the TriCity News writes, "April Smith is as good as it gets when it comes to harvesting original beats and lyrics crafted in such a way as to take your breath away."

April was born and raised in Toms River, New Jersey. With both of her parents being blessed musically, April was destined to be a musician herself. Throughout her childhood, April was exposed to many great artists, the artists that would mold her musically. "My whole family was into Queen. We all loved the theatrical quality of the music. My parents encouraged us to listen to whatever we wanted to so there was this incredible selection of music to listen to in our house." From this diverse collection of musical influences, April created a sound all her own.

It wasn't until her 19th birthday that her father gave her a guitar. "I don't read music, so I have this really raw relationship with the guitar. I just wander around it until I hear something that calls to me." Before long, April was writing music and playing at bars and coffee shops in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It was during this time that April became enamored of other inspiring musicians. " I was in awe of Jeff Buckley and his writing ability. I knew I wanted to make people feel that way too. When I sing, I just close my eyes and go somewhere else. And that's where I try to take other people with my music."

April has recently completed recording the 6-song Demo CD Revenge of the Brunette, as well as the DVD press video of the same title. In the meantime, April is performing solo acoustic gigs in the NJ/NY area. In January of 2004, 90.5 FM, WBJB in Lincroft, NJ added "Dixie Boy" and "Something" to its play list. "When we first came across her music, primarily, we thought she just had an amazing, intense voice, " said Jeff Raspe, music director for The Night, "and we felt the writing was really good as well."

If you're still wondering how to describe April's music, stop thinking and listen. "There's such a range of influences in my music and I think that makes it appealing to everyone. It's simple, straightforward music that grabs hold of the audience. " Regardless of your taste in music, you only have to hear her once and you will know why people become silent when she takes the stage. "All I want to do is play my music and reach as many people as I possibly can. I just know that it's time for people to hear this."
