notes

Choro is considered to be the first urban music of Brazil, fusing elements of European and African music yet played in a distinctly Brazilian way. Choro is to Brazil what Jazz is to the United States.

Born in Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th century, choro music has evolved throughout the years, especially through the works of masters like Luperce Miranda, Jacob do Bandolim and Pixinguinha.

Choro remains strong in Brazil today, with each generation of young musicians re-shaping the choro tradition.
Four of these shining young artists got together to record a tribute to one of Brazil's finest mandolin players, Luperce Miranda.

The choro group AQuattro blends the choro tradition of Luperce with the energy of a new generation of bright musicians. The result is a powerful, melodic and rythmic experience.

AQuattro brings together a killer quartet of talent and sonority. On seven-stringed guitar is Fernando Cesar, on percussion is Valerinho, Pedro Vasconcellos grooves on his cavaquinho and Dudu Maia has the challenge to perform Luperce's melodies on his ten-stringed mandolin. Together they light up the stage with their joy and energy, with non-stop musical conversation and improvisation, interpreting the rich musical heritage of Brazil.

  • Great Cd!
    author: Linda Binder

I've been listening to this CD a lot and it's hard not to smile when I hear it. The playing is so clean, energetic and fun. Dudu's bandolim playing rocks! His gorgeous intro to Rebolico is an expressive, tasteful solo utilizing the full range of his ten string bandolim. On every track this is a wonderful recording of the great bandolim master Luperce Miranda's joyous music.
