GET INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT: listen to the beautiful IN THE BLEAK MID-WINTER and THE CHERRY TREE CAROL from Ariella Uliano' s CD 'A.U. ( almost ) a Compilation'.

Ariella Uliano - A .U . (almost) a Compilation

Once again, Ariella Uliano offers us a breathtaking and original artistic product, perhaps her best to date.
In ' A .U. ( almost ) a Compilation ' modern songs, traditional ballads and period dances are beautifully intertwined and the pure sound of Uliano's soprano voice together with the rich orchestral and vocal arrangements create haunting and magical atmospheres.

There is a sense of spirituality, love and introspection in Ariella's songs, as well as a touch of lightness and irony as, for instance, in GOOD MORNING LONDON ( An English Summer's Day ).

Many the gems to be found in this collection but three in particular are in my opinion outstanding: Walter Scott’s ELLEN'S THIRD SONG ( from The Lady Of The Lake, Hymn To The Virgin ) for most of us Schubert’s AVE MARIA; Child’s ballad THE THREE RAVENS ( new version ) and a live version of UNTITLED.

In preparing this CD, Ariella Uliano and her new ensemble of virtuoso instrumentalists have created fresh arrangements for some of her old hits.

Among my favourites are: SO, WE' LL GO NO MORE A-ROVING ( new version ) by Lord Byron; IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER
( new version ) by Christina Rossetti ( played on the pianoforte by Bartolomeo Ortuso ); CHERRY TREE CAROL ( new version ) and the Celtic classics SKYE BOAT SONG ( remix ) and SALLEY GARDENS ( new version ).

The album opens with NON PARLAR TROPPO D'AMORE an Italian song of great beauty, and towards the end of the programme we find CANTO D'AUTUNNO ( Autumn Song ) also sung in Italian. On these two tracks in particular Ariella Uliano's voice and melodies reach new levels and depth, leaving her audiences entranced.

Uliano has chosen to release a special edition of ' A .U. ( almost ) a Compilation ' with an accompanying 32 pages A5 size book: this elegant portfolio features some of her B/W artwork and photographs selected as a commentary to the poetry.

The album is a work of art and Ariella delivers once more an excellent product.

In ' A .U . ( almost ) a Compilation ' ancora una volta Ariella Uliano ci offre un prodotto artistico originale e di alta qualità in cui l'antico e il moderno si fondono nel suono puro della sua voce soprano e nei ricchi arrangiamenti orchestrali.

Ci sono spiritualità e introspezione nella canzoni di Uliano, ma anche un tocco di leggerezza e ironia, come ad esempio nel brano GOOD MORNING LONDON ( Un Giorno Di Estate Inglese ).

Molte le gemme in questa collezione ma tre in particolare sono a mio parere di eccezionale bellezza, si tratta di ELLEN'S THIRD SONG, più conosciuta come l' AVE MARIA di Schubert con il testo di Walter Scott ( dal poema The Lady Of The Lake ); il brano originale CANTO D'AUTUNNO e la magica ballata tradizionale anglo- scozzese THE THREE RAVENS ( new version ).

In ' A .U . ( almost ) a Compilation ' Ariella ha rivisitato con freschi arrangiamenti alcune canzoni dal primo album e fra queste troviamo SO, WE' LL GO NO MORE A-ROVING ( new version ), il cui appassionato testo d'amore fu composto da G. G. Byron durante l' esilio veneziano; IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER ( new version ) di Christina Rossetti, sorella del poeta preraffaelita Dante Gabriel; la suggestiva THE CHERRY TREE CAROL ( new version ) e i due classici brani Celtici SKYE BOAT SONG ( new version ) dalla Scozia e SALLEY GARDENS ( new version ) dall' Irlanda, quest'ultimo da una poesia di W. B. Yeats.

Il nuovo CD apre con NON PARLAR TROPPO D'AMORE la cui antica melodia francese riveste il testo in italiano. Quando la musicista, che vive e studia a Londra, canta in lingua italiana la sua voce raggiunge un livello e una profondità particolari ed ha il potere di incantare l'audience d'oltremare.

N.B.
A questo proposito è d'obbligo citare l'altra preziosissima realizzazione in italiano di Uliano, il CD TANTO GENTILE E TANTO ONESTA PARE con liriche medievali e rinascimentali ( tra cui l'omonimo sonetto di Dante Alighieri ), melodie irlandesi e scozzesi e la collaborazione di artisti internazionali.
Come ospiti speciali appaiono: Stefano Paiusco per la recitazione del Canto V di Dante Alighieri, I Mi Trovai Fanciulle un Bel Mattino di Angelo Poliziano e un estratto dalla Canzona di Bacco di Lorenzo De' Medici; Francesco Gualerzi al sassofono; Will Killeen per la versione irlandese di Arsi, Piansi, Cantai di Gaspara Stampa e infine Stefan Oslansky al pianoforte per le ballate celtiche Mary Hamilton e Lover's Ghost.

Ariella Uliano è un'artista completa e per ' A .U . ( almost ) a Compilation ' ha scelto di far pubblicare un'edizione speciale dell'opera, accompagnata da un libretto di 32 pagine contenente preziosi disegni a china e fotografie ispirati alle liriche.
Il libretto è un piccolo capolavoro e il CD è forse l'album più significativo e rappresentativo della produzione e carriera di questa artista internazionale.

Per tutti i fans che ammirano il lavoro di Ariella Uliano e che seguono la sua carriera di musicista e ricercatrice, questo lavoro rappresenta l'originale risultato di una fusione di stili e influenze che da sempre permeano, in mille modi diversi, l'arte e la cultura di tutti gli artisti alla continua ricerca di un linguaggio universale.
