Album Notes

At the age of thirteen, after listening to Todd Rundgren, Ari Fox Lauren knew that she had to become a musician. She was already musically inclined; a self-taught keyboard player from the age of six on up, Ari also took voice lessons, and, for a brief stint, tried her hand at blues slide guitar.

Although she holds both an undergraduate and a graduate degree in music, Ari maintains that she learned more from listening to the radio than from her studies. A steady routine of listening to classic jazz, classic rock, and soul stations resulted in a style that melded the influences of Herbie Hancock, Donald Fagen, Joe Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Curtis Mayfield, in addition to the aforementioned Rundgren.

Ari completed her graduate thesis, an analysis of the music of Laura Nyro, at the University of Chicago. While the Windy City and its glorious lakefront provided Ari with plenty of inspiration, she knew after awhile that the time had come to move back to her homeland, the east coast. She now resides in New York City, where she regularly performs at venues throughout the area. If you happen to be in town on a Thursday, you can catch her weekly show at Patelson's Music House, located 160 W. 56th Street in Manhattan, from 5:30 to 7:00pm, and enjoy free wine and cheese while you listen!

The music and musicianship are terrific, although the mix could be better; Ari's voice and the piano sound lovely together. Some of it is very Todd Rundgrenish, perhaps only because I read about Todd's influence on Ari; I'm not sure I would have linked it without the info. I hope I hear more from this talented young lady!
