ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
UPDATED MARCH 24, 2010

MORE CDS ON THEIR WAY TO STOCK!! Thank you for your continued support!

Note from Arlee: 3/24/10 - You know my favorite expression? Life is Good, All the Time! Another one I'm remembering a lot these days - All is Well. Stand in this truth and don't be afraid to let your light shine! Then all is well indeed! Peace ya'll!

Note from Arlee: 8/6/09 - The heat is on! This Leo woman is celebrating her birthday August 8th with a gig in New Orleans at The Bombay Club, 830 Conti St. in the French Quarter, from 9:30pm-12:30am. More gigs in the Southern sphere, then heading much farther south to the JOY OF JAZZ FESTIVAL in Johannesburg, South Africa for shows August 28th & 29th! See you somewhere!

March 23, 2009 - Note from Arlee: Hello my dears! I need to visit this site more often myself for updates - it's been awhile. But for a quick note, I'm currently in Marseille, France performing a work entitled "Zou, Shake That Thing!" with Moussu T e lei Jovents. We are honoring the writer Claude McKay and his book "Banjo" with a musical collaboration of blues and jazz from the 1920's and Marseillais operettas from the same period. A fun mix of Franco/American musical styles! And I realize I've run out of CDs here. Please place your order - I'll be sending more as soon as I get home next week!! Peace and Love, Arlee

"Arlee Leonard is a cool jazz dynamo who leaves audiences simmering with her sultry and sophisticated jazz. If you are wondering about her technique to connect with an audience, Leonard explains it this way: "I sing from my heart and really try to touch people in theirs."
- Michael Farrar, 2THEADVOCATE.COM profile, 4/1/08

To read the rest of this press profile please visit: http://www.2theadvocate.com/entertainment/17207571.html?index=1&c=y

"Singer Arlee Leonard displayed a lustrous voice and impressive range during her set, her “Time Keeps Slipping into the Future” serving as a platform for her appeal to politicians to make good on promises to help displaced Orleanians (more than 200,000 of whom are still living elsewhere) get onto the road home. “We need all our people back to keep growing the next generations of Louis Armstrongs,” she said."
- Sandy Ingham, ALLABOUTJAZZ.COM review of New Orleans' Satchmo Summer Fest, 8/17/07

"Arlee has a voice that can embrace the whole room, but she uses it with care, providing many variations of light and shade. It swoops, it soars, it teases; it is light and youthful, or deep and bluesy. Sometimes she re-invents songs, sometimes simply decorates them so that they come up like new. But always she swings, and however seductive the song may be _ or however optimistic, like Almost like Being in Love _ you're always listening to a truly authentic jazz singer."
- Brian Kent, BANGKOK POST Feature Story, 2/4/05

**QUOTES FROM CD LINER NOTES BY DON BRADEN**

"Wild Honey" symbolizes many aspects of Arlee's persona. She is sweet and sophisticated, yet unpredictable. She is unbridled but disciplined, soft but strong, sensuous yet sassy. And of course she is all natural!... One of the hippest things about Arlee is that she enjoys - even relishes - interaction with instrumentalists...we enjoy working with Arlee because she is imaginative, soulful, and hip enough to encourage the extended harmony and rhythms favored by modern composers/arrangers."

4) PRESS REVIEWS OF CD:
**********
"Right off the bat, the disc has three things going for it. The charts are lush and varied, Arlee Leonard has written some IMPRESSIVE ORIGINALS, and HER VOICE CRACKLES WITH LIFE. At its heart, the band is a feisty piano trio; guitars and percussion slink in as needed.... Reminds me of Laura Nyro in the tempo shifts and the vocal leaps.... It's lightning-fast and your hear every word - that is something.... So is Marcus Printup, blaring that old-fashioned brass. Producer Don Braden gets his on "Sista's Blues," a ferocious old honk that spars well with Printup. They wail, she moans - and you're feeling pretty good....EMOTIONS REIGN SUPREME, as they do through this album.... DEEP AND WOODY, SHE'S SENSUAL AT THE SAME TIME THAT SHE'S PLAYFUL.... Arlee has many talents, and is not afraid to use them."
- John Barrett, Jr., JAZZ IMPROV

"Vocally, Leonard is equally ambitious, giving each song her full energy. WHILE SHE LURES ONE WITH HER SULTRINESS, SHE HAS THE POWER TO SURPRISE. On her and Braden's "Rose's Song," the vocalist reaches up in octaves and down in her soul for an impassioned soft scream.... Leonard is skillful with jazz standards as well, bringing A LOT OF HEART AND ENTHUSIASM to tunes...on Duke Ellington's "I'm Beginning to See the Light," sung in a dreamily slow style with Leonard modulating one-syllable words into three or four, the song's well-known personality changes dramatically.... Turrentine's classic "Sugar" is a fine vehicle for Leonard to display her scatting skills as the album closes. HER EXTENSIVE VOCAL RANGE PUTS SOME REAL PUNCH IN HER SCAT.... Arlee Leonard was obviously ready for her debut with Wild Honey, an album that SHOWS HER TO BE A SOPHISTICATED VOCALIST IN POSSESSION OF EQUAL PARTS SKILL AND PASSION."
- Geraldine Wyckoff, GAMBIT WEEKLY

"If Arlee Leonard was an alto saxophonist instead of a singer, she would inspire comparisons to Cannonball Adderley or Lou Donaldson instead of Paul Desmond...the term "hard-swinging" certainly describes WILD HONEY, Leonard's debut album. EMOTIONALLY, LEONARD DOESN'T HOLD BACK ON THIS CD....and she shows herself to be A TALENTED COMPOSER on gritty originals like "Sista's Blues (Blue is What I Am)" and "Tokens of Appreciation."
- Alex Henderson, ALL MUSIC GUIDE

7-2-07 - MYSPACE CRAZE IN NEW ORLEANS!:
Hi all, if you read this, lovely! But I am spending much more time online at my Myspace page now, so please visit me there for future messages, an easy view calendar, lots of pics, some new live recordings, and much more! Thanks for your interest in my music! Peace, Arlee

4-20-07 - BACK IN BROOKLYN!:
I just returned from a wonderful 3 - 1/2 months in THAILAND, performing on an extended contract at the CONRAD HOTEL in Bangkok for the third warm winter in a row, and ending with a wild week in Koh Chang singing for my supper at MAGIC GARDEN (and at JANE CHALET RESORT), the former conceived and operated by my friend Marcus. Check out www.MAGICGARDENTHAILAND.COM and tell them I sent you! In between, I also had the pleasure of singing at the US AMBASSADOR'S RESIDENCE for a BLACK HISTORY MONTH celebration/concert detailing some of the history of jazz through song. I was supposed to be accompanied by the wonderful bassist/vocalist ELDEE YOUNG'S trio out of Chicago, but unfortunately, he passed away in Bangkok a week before. I performed with his pianist, drummer and a sub on bass and dedicated the performance in his honor. Eldee will be sorely missed on the Asian jazz scene and by all those who knew and loved him.

I am performing as a guest artist for two upcoming benefits for the NEW ORLEANS MUSICIAN'S CLINIC, one in New York and one in New Orleans. Details below or on my Myspace page - check out www.MYSPACE.COM/ARLEEL! Peace and Blessings for a lovely spring!

12-2-06 – BROOKLYN, NY:
And the crazy thing about my life is, when I’m home people say, “What are you doing here?” Like last night in Harlem. Hey, I live here, some of the time!

10-29-06 - IRKUSTK, RUSSIA:
I'm on tour in Russia and had a fantastic time in the far east/Vladivostok, performing for 700 people in concert there, and in Siberia/Irkutsk, performing two well-received concerts. Now it's back to Moscow and concerts at the US Ambassador's residence and the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall with the Ivanov Brothers and SymphoJazz. Looking forward!

8-24-06 – NEW ORLEANS, LA:
I made it safely to New Orleans yesterday, after less than 48 hours 'home' in New York! It's good to be home for real! My parents took me on a whirlwind straight from the airport last night and I ended up singing a song with Davell Crawford, Kid Chocolate and others at St. Anna's church dinner/jam. I was tired but it was fun!

7-17-06 – SINGAPORE:
Greetings from SINGAPORE! Come and hear me at HARRY'S BAR at 28 Boat Quay every Tues. - Sat. night until August 19!! I'm having a great time with the ChromaZone Band and all the lovely people in this easy-going land.

6-14-06 – BROOKLYN, NY:
I just got back from MOSCOW and had the fun fortune to sit in with New Orleans' own PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND at the JVC JAZZ FESTIVAL kick-off at Gracie Mansion here in NYC on Monday night! Saw two folks I used to gig with in New Orleans on the bandstand too, Walter Payton on bass and Carl LeBlanc on banjo. It was great to get some Big Easy spirit and groove in the Big Apple!

I had a wonderful time in Moscow for 2-1/2 weeks doing gigs with a DJ, live trumpet and percussion, and sometimes, a classical harpist. Different and fun! Also performed with a jazz quartet at the French Embassy.

5-5-06 – NEW ORLEANS, LA:
After three months in THAILAND and one week home in NEW YORK, I'm now in NEW ORLEANS, taking in the spirit, the joy, the stories, and the pain, while sharing my voice and some of my post-Katrina poetry at many venues around town. I didn't book any gigs of my own as I mainly wanted to get here and see how my people were doing and where they are. As it happens, gigs and guest appearances appear, including performing at Jazz Fest again with my wonderful parents, David & Roselyn. Also did a wonderful benefit concert for the New Orleans Musician’s clinic at the Old Point Bar with producer Marc Stone, The Campbell Brothers with other amazing musicians.

SPECIAL NOTE FROM FALL 2005:
Please help New Orleans musicians rebuild their lives and livelihoods!! Laissez le bon temps roulez! Visit www.wwoz.org for a list of organizations you can donate to, and listen to some great New Orleans music while you do!

My parents, David & Roselyn, have been on their "Louisiana Evacuee Restoration Tour" on and off since they evacuated for the storm. They've raised almost $8,000 so far for the New Orleans Musician's Clinic, Tipitina's Foundation, and The Preservation Hall Musician's Hurricane Relief Fund. You can visit their website at www.davidandroselyn.com or email them at dayro@bellsouth.net for more bookings. We still have to get our own house back in livable condition. Your support is appreciated.

THANKS FOR VISITING THIS SITE! PLEASE READ ON AND TAKE A LISTEN TO MY CD, "WILD HONEY!" I WISH YOU A PROSPEROUS AND JOYFILLED LIFE! LOVE AND PEACE, ARLEE

FOR A WORD ON ARLEE'S MUSICIAN PARENTS: "David and Roselyn shout, croon and growl, teasing every nuance of raw, exuberant sensuality out of the lyric. David sails into a harmonica break...Roselyn's mandolin tickles out the melody and her foot keeps time on the tambourine, while David's guitar strums solid rhythm and their voices blend in comfortable harmony." - Elijah Wald, River of Song, Smithsonian Institute.

7) SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF ARLEE LEONARD:
************

ARLEE LEONARD - VOCALIST, SONGWRITER, POET, PRODUCER, WRITER

WHY IS ARLEE LEONARD’S DEBUT CD CALLED “WILD HONEY?” Because she’s unbridled, warm, dynamic, and sweet! As her CD co-producer, jazz saxophonist DON BRADEN says, “She’s all natural!” Being the daughter of acclaimed blues/folk icons “DAVID & ROSELYN,” Arlee was brought up on the road and on stage. That is where she still feels most at home.

WHETHER MS. LEONARD is singing in the New Year at JAZZTOWN in Moscow (Dec. 31, 2007), jamming with her band at the FRENCH QUARTER FESTIVAL (April 2008) and SATCHMO SUMMERFEST (August 2007) in NEW ORLEANS, harmonizing with a classical harpist at TCHAIKOVSKY CONCERT HALL (MOSCOW, Oct. ‘06), scatting samba with SYMPHOJAZZ in SHOSTAKOVITCH GREAT HALL (ST. PETERSBURG, Dec. ‘05), swinging with WYNTON MARSALIS’ group in New Orleans for a TV taping, “AMBASSADORS OF SWING” (Aug. ‘06), stomping the blues in SINGAPORE (Summer ‘06 and Fall '07), smoldering a ballad in BANGKOK (Winter/Spring ‘05, '06, '07), feeling the spirit at SACRED CENTER NY, or leading her bands in NEW YORK and NEW ORLEANS (1996 - 2008), Arlee brings her joie de vivre and well-honed expertise to every stage. She works it out and sets the pace for 2 or 20,000 happy listeners!

WITH HER 4-OCTAVE RANGE and strong command of the classic elements of jazz vocalizing, Arlee's multifaceted singing style is complimented by her joyfully engaging stage presence and graceful moves. She flows effortlessly from swing to soul, from slow caress to Afro/Latin rhythmic explosions, shifting on again to beautiful ballads and down home blues. Arlee has begun exploring spoken word following an outpouring of writing in response to Hurricane Katrina and the devastation in New Orleans. She continues to develop a project, “THE SOUL OF NEW ORLEANS,” and intends to record and publish a book. She is working on two other collections of poetry, lyrics, memoir moments and travel notes, one on love’s ups and downs, the other exploring her spiritual and life journey.

THIS VERSATILE SINGER BEGAN PERFORMING at age six in coffee houses in DETROIT with her parents. In 1991, her multi-racial family toured GERMANY, FRANCE, HOLLAND and SWITZERLAND, and she’s sung with them or other bands for the last twenty JAZZ & HERITAGE FESTIVALS in New Orleans, where her family thankfully still has a home. Ms. Leonard, raised in California, Michigan and New Orleans, studied music, theater and dance at SANTA MONICA HIGH SCHOOL and the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SANTA CRUZ, earning a B.A. in Sociology, with honors.

ARLEE CURRENTLY TRAVELS THE WORLD as a guest vocalist and bandleader, receiving praise from critics and audiences alike for her CD "WILD HONEY" and live performances. Ms. Leonard has performed in SINGAPORE, RUSSIA, THAILAND, FRANCE, CHINA, THE PHILIPPINES, JAPAN, DUBAI, TAIWAN, SPAIN, CANADA, GUATEMALA and across the UNITED STATES. Arlee has performed at the homes of US AMBASSADORS in Bangkok, Thailand (Feb. '07), and Moscow, Russia (Oct. '06). At the CUTTING ROOM in New York City Arlee hosted and sang with a cadre of D.C. dignitaries known at THE COALITION OF THE WILLING, as well as with RONNIE SPECTOR and with the JULLIARD JAZZ SEXTET, in a fundraiser for the NEW ORLEANS MUSICIAN'S CLINIC (April '07).

She sang for the opening of a GUGGENHEIM Exhibit, "200 YEARS OF AMERICAN INNOVATION" at the PUSHKIN MUSUEM and RITZ-CARLTON in Moscow (July '07) with the ARI ROLAND QUARTET. In July '07, Arlee's performance at New Orleans' premier jazz venue, SNUG HARBOR, was broadcast live over the world wide web on WWW.WWOZ.ORG, and she performed for the first time at New Orleans' SATCHMO SUMMERFEST in Aug. '07. September '07 saw a return to New York's SWEET RHYTHM before Ms. Leonard was off to a repeat engagement at HARRY'S BAR - Boat Quay in Singapore with THE CHROMAZONE BAND. She ended the year with performances in Louisiana and Russia, and began 2008 singing back in New York at SWEET RHYTHM.

When home in New York and New Orleans, Arlee graces the stage at renowned jazz venues including SNUG HARBOR and SWEET LORRAIINE'S (New Orleans), and BIRDLAND, LENOX LOUNGE, BLUE NOTE, BAMCAFE (New York). Arlee has sung for the FRENCH QUARTER FESTIVAL, NEW ORLEANS JAZZ & HERITAGE FESTIVAL, SATCHMO SUMMERFEST (New Orleans), INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR JAZZ EDUCATION (IAJE) conference in Toronto, and for the JVC JAZZ FESTIVAL, WOMEN IN MUSIC FESTIVAL, several INTERNATIONAL WOMEN IN JAZZ (IWJ) concerts, and the IMPACT FESTIVAL in New York. She was a panelist and showcase artist at the CUTTING EDGE MUSIC BUSINESS CONFERENCE in New Orleans (Aug. 2006).

ARLEE RELEASED HER SELF-PRODUCED DEBUT CD "WILD HONEY" (SolaJazz Records) in 2000, and has recorded for other producers, bandleaders, and songwriters, including a Fall '07 release by New Orleans' trumpeter SHAMARR ALLEN. Her debut includes seven originals and distinctive arrangements of five classics by some of her favorite composers. She assembled some of New York’s finest for the recording, including DON BRADEN/sax, MARCUS PRINTUP/trumpet, MIRI BEN-ARI/violin, ERIC LEWIS/piano, FREDDIE BRYANT/guitar, DWAYNE BURNO/bass, DWAYNE “COOK BROADNAX/drums, and DANNY SADOWNICK/percussion.

Some of her U.S. band mates have been ART HIRAHARA, FRED SANDERS, CARLTON HOLMES, DEANNA WITKOWSKI, LARRY SIEBERTH and JOE ASHLAR/piano, RON AFFIF and FREDDIE BRYANT/guitar, CALVIN JONES, PAUL BEAUDRY, EDWIN LIVINGSTON, DON VAPPIE, JAMES SINGLETON and DAVID PULPHUS/bass, JASON MARSALIS, DWAYNE BROADNAX, TROY DAVIS, JAZ SAWYER, ADONIS ROSE, OLEG BUTMAN and JOHNNY VIDACOVICH/drums, WALTER BLANDING, JR., WESS ANDERSON, JR., TONY DAGRADI, CLARENCE JOHNSON III and REBECCA BARRY/sax, MARCUS PRINTUP and IRVIN MAYFIELD/trumpet, and DELFEAYO MARSALIS/trombone.

For several years she was the Secretary to the Board of Directors of IWJ, and has been a member of IAJE, the Jazz Foundation of America, the Jazz Vocal Coalition, and Jazz Alliance International. Arlee is an ASCAP writer and publisher. As an artist and as a person, Arlee is always reaching for her higher ground. When she shines, you will smile!

8) INTERVIEW QUOTE & PERFORMANCE REVIEWS:
***************
IN THE SUMMER 2004 ISSUE (Vol. 4, No. 4) of JAZZ IMPROV magazine ARLEE LEONARD WAS FEATURED IN A 4-1/2 PAGE INTERVIEW.

WHEN ASKED WHAT SENSATIONS SHE FELT WHEN SINGING, part of her response was: "On stage, everything is heightened.... I try not to ever sing a song the same way twice... I sometimes get carried away on sounds into a special zone that is like meditating, whether I'm making quieter choices or scatting away. I LOVE IT WHEN I FEEL THE AUDIENCE RIGHT THERE WITH ME after we've been transported in a song together for awhile. That's the best! BEING IN THE SPIRIT OF THE MOMENT IS WHAT IT'S MOST ABOUT for me, being true to that lyric and song that night, being in harmony with those accompanists that moment, being aware of nothing else but the song, letting it speak and tell it's story through me. That's the ideal.... YOU KNOW WHAT I MOSTLY FEEL WHEN I SING, JOY! Joy and Love! I feel like I'm giving my joy and my love to my audience and to my musicians, and I love receiving theirs back. That's truly the best."

Visit www.JazzImprov.com for more information.

***** PERFORMANCE REVIEWS *****

"SHE BROUGHT FIRE ON STAGE with her performances...Her SUBTLE SENSUALITY AND IMPASSIONED GROOVES make her one jazz singer Manila would surely miss, and [she] would be welcomed for more soulful nights."
- Ro-Charmaine M. Pidal, THE DAILY TRIBUNE, Manila, Philippines, 10/31/03

"New York-based singer Arlee Leonard performed one night at Lunaria...Her scatting was excellent, she was creative over closing vamps and Leonard's high notes proved to be particularly appealing...HER FUTURE IS WELL WORTH WATCHING." - Scott Yanow, L.A. JAZZ SCENE, Fall 2002

"Sharing the stage, in this round, singer Arlee Leonard was the central figure of the show...With her, [Don] Braden was humbly resigned to the role of accompanist...It was one of those nights that MELT PLACIDLY TOWARDS AN END THAT NOBODY WANTS." - IDEAL, Granada, Spain (translated from Spanish)

"Listening and watching the shapely Arlee sing the likes of "This Can't Be Love" brings to mind the classic movie "The Fabulous Baker Boys".... Garbed in a body-hugging but elegant evening gown, she croons effortlessly. HER VOICE IS LANGUOROUS, she's not just like Michelle Pfiefer (with a more beautiful singing voice), she's Jessica Rabbit in the flesh."
- Dennis Ladaw, THE MANILA TIMES, 11/1/03

DELIGHTFULLY SURPRISED
I got the CD because I had seen Arlee's parents in New Orleans Jackson Square 6 years ago. So, I was CURIOUS what their daughter would sound like and what kind of music she would do. I certainly was not prepared to be blown away so completely. Playing the CD a lot and liking it more and more. On top of that, I am going to French Quarter Festival in April -- AND I WILL GET TO SEE HER PERFORM! Yeah, very happy with the CD..

Pumpkins' Patches

Standards of the future of a bright young star
A spirited CD featuring the talented and beautiful Arlee Leonard. Much of this batch of songs are Leonard compositions I suspect will be future standards. Ms. Leonard shares many moods with her audience on this CD. As I’m listening while writing this piece a song that really jumps out at me is “Inside of You.” This is a spirit filled and awakening composition that brings forth the feeling you can rise. “You have wings you can fly. Please find them. Spirit lives in you. And will reveal what is the truth.” It’s upbeat and happy. Sending your soul to places heretofore unknown. This piece rocks with Eric Lewis, piano, Dwayne Burno, bass, Miri Ben-Arii, violin. It ranks with songs like “Winner in You” and “You Can Fly.” It speaks to the soul.
She takes you to another level with “Sista’s Blues (Blue is What I Am).” It’s a jazzy little blues tune. She reaches out to you with “Ain’t got no gigs ain’t got no money ain’t got no man.” Anyone can understand that. She strikes a cord with, “Got me a day job it don’t even pay my bill…All I got is me but blue is what I am.” To this piece she added on guitar Freddie Bryant, Marcus Printup, trumpet and Don Braden, tenor sax. This piece moves you to understand how bad one can feel and how little is needed to make one happy. It is reminiscent of “Miss Celie’s Blues” from COLOR PURPLE. It just has that feel.
In addition to the above songs Ms. Leonard adds “Sugar” Turrentines’s classic, “Dindi” a Jobim piece and “On A Clear Day” a Lerner/Lane composition. To all she brings a feeling and range unrivaled today. Her rendition of “Cry Me A River” creates pain. It has a haunting feel and yet she makes the title more of a command than a request. Listening to her is like crashing in your favorite chair. The music just wraps you up.

Touching the same senses...
Wild Honey... the title captures the feelings, the music and the smooth energy of Arlee. The music comes across as if one is sitting front center enjoying the live performance. I caught her gig in Shanghai. The CD touches the same senses, all you need is to let your mind see. Peace, always...

Sexy, Sweet, Inspiring, Uplifting
A must have CD for a true jazz music lover. Arlee's voice reaches the sky, and also mellows in the grass. I loved the entire CD and will definitely purchase her next CD. To see and hear Arlee perform in person at Sugar Hill Bistro 3/30/02 allowed me to appreciate even more her tremendous vocal abilities.
