Album Notes

ARPAY is a Quechua word that means effort, success, or reaching the summit. This name identifies this ensemble of Andean and Latin American musicians. Arpay's vision is to share its music with the world. This mission has taken Arpay to the United States, Germany, Belgium, and Latin America.

Cesar, Fernando and Jose Reyes, and Constancio Tarqui founded Arpay on April 4, 1984. Raul Valle and Ismael Barboza later joined them.

ARPAY has integrated to its music the feelings and way-of-life of the Andean people by transforming their traditional expression of defeat, frustration, and resentment, into an extraordinary liberation song of faith, hope and love.

ARPAY sings about life and through music, invites us to fullness of life.

Arpay, who plays traditional Andean music, shared their gifts and message at chapel. In their native language, arpay means sacrifice. The members hail from Peru and Ecuador, and they use instrumentation that is native to their homeland. They also make their instruments.
Singing from Psalms 121, 134, and 84, Arpay shared their message of the Gospel of Jesus.

Arpay brings folk music of the Andes
Contributed by Landon Yoder October 24, 2003

The group brings together musicians from Peru, Ecuador and Argentina to perform in the Sauder Concert Hall on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Alum Alex Naula and senior Malcolm Sedaca will join Arpay members José Reyes and Oscar Rodríguez in the performance.

Andean folk music has traditionally built on melodies and rhythms from the flute and drum. "The audience will be able to get a sense of how South Americans from the Andes do and feel music," said Sedaca.

Arpay formed in 1984, out of one band member's desire to share his Christian faith. The group has recorded several CD's, which they hope will encourage and inspire people to return to the ways of love, truth and hope.

Arpay performs music incorporating traditional expressions of defeat, frustration and resentment within the Andean culture, into liberation songs of faith, hope and love. "What I enjoy the most about playing Andean music is that I can feel these rhythms deep in my heart," said Sedaca. "I grew up in a country that loved this style. Andean music has the power and ability to express my South American identity in musical language."

REVIEWS

Excellent music

I got the opportunity to listen to many Andes Folkloric music, but there is not a better group than Arpay. Their songs (whether written by them or interpretations) and the use of a variety of genuine andes instruments, many times handmade by themselves, brings a stream of emotions and cultural richness that penetrates the soul. Their CDs are a must have!!!

Beautiful, relaxing and reflective
author: Victor Fletes, US
I love this CD. When I sleep, I listen to its sound. When I wake I listen to the faster songs on the CD. When I pray to God, it helps me to concentrate and focus on my relationship with Jesus Christ. I have used one of the instrumental songs as an audio for a poem I am writing for class. Best of all, however, is the fact that song #4 has helped me to overcome a fire of Eros love that I had previously for probably the most gorgeous chilean woman I have ever seen. Song #4,"The way", spoke to me because the only way to find to peace is through loving as Jesus Christ did, unconditionally. Though I know this gorgeous girl, Jamie, had a boyfriend, I can now be at peace to know that I can be her loving friend and admire the beauty the God gave her. Thank God for this CD! I am growing and maturing in my relationships and emotions with Jesus and people because of the inspiration on that song. I know that she will be happy with him, Oh beautiful Jamie!, and I am fulfilled to know that fact. I love her as a sister and a friend. Thank you Arpey, this CD is beautiful, relaxing and reflective.
