Album Notes

2006's Applewine finds Alex honing his idiosyncratic style further into a middle ground between goof-pop songs and funeral dirges. Many of the songs return to the long-favored theme of modern life's follies. Did I just write "follies"? Ew. Additionally, I bet you've never heard anyone rhyme "tsunami" with "salami." Eat it, Bob Dylan. But as your ear drums will confirm, a fine-tuned focus on melody and guitars shows Alex's songwriting at its strongest yet, with songs for you to sing by yourself in your shower (or with other people, if that's your thing). Alex's production is also his clearest and cleanest yet, providing the perfect Monet-like canvas for these papoose-like songs. NOTE: Applewine is NOT a homemade CD-R release. It is a professionally manufactured CD! Testimonials: "Alex Arrowsmith is a man with enormous talent and potential. Currently one of the thousands upon thousands of obscure home recording artists toiling away in obscurity, this man's music stands out because there is substance in his recordings." - Babysue.com "Alex Arrowsmith is quirky, intelligent, and fun, writing playful and often childlike melodies surrounded by jangly guitars and sophisticated pop." --Jennifer Layton, Indie-music.com "My moustache is firmer than ever thanks to the smooth, waxy qualities of Alex Arrowsmith's Applewine!" --some dude from a barbershop quartet "This guy both cracks me up and makes me want to listen to his wit and wisdom over and over." - Eartaste.com "Possibly genius." - Pucknation.com "Nice, laid-back college rock with a sense of humour and effortless talent . . . Yet another landmark attesting to Arrowsmith's talent
author: Alyssa Perkins
If the past is indeed the best predictor of current behavior, Applewine is no surprise. The natural progression of Alex Arrowsmith's music shows each album continually out-doing those before it, each one displaying a more defined version of what Arrowsmith is about. Applewine is a demonstration of an artist acutely aware of his own abilities and how to harness them in song form. Here the serious and silly collide but never clash, pop culture references flourish, and "def jams" is rhymed with "webcams." Songs bounce along, never lagging and never overstaying their welcome. Arrowsmith's vocals are crisp and enthusiastic. Guitar solos are more plentiful than in his previous work, and they blend into the songs seamlessly, as though they are meant to be there. Highly-produced gems such as "Fearful Symmetry" and "Coldplay Got Eaten by Piranhas" are placed effortlessly alongside stripped-down songs such as "I Hope You're Never Crushed by Something Heavy." This is the work of an artist brilliantly versed in all aspects of songwriting, production and musicianship offering up his most superbly executed album to date.
