Album Notes

Storyteller Asha's Baba is a practitioner of the ancient West African Bardic Tradition, Jaliyaa. Jaliyaa, as an art form, encompasses a broad range of creative disciplines: the telling of tales, recitation of epic and heroic poems, singing and study of traditional songs.

Baba's mission, and challenge, as an artist, is to interpret this ancient art form into an educational/entertaining body of work enjoyed by western audiences, without degrading its valuable heritage/traditions.

Baba travels throughout the country, performing for every type of cultural and social gathering imaginable: traditional African naming ceremonies for newborn babies, traditional weddings, rituals and burials. He also tours aspects of this art form to elementary/secondary schools, Colleges and Universities as well as public/private institutions (i.e. parks and recreation, libraries, human resource division programming for corporations, etc.)

Jaliyaa Buka Ban! (Jaliyaa has no ending!)

I met you at the Jackie Torrence Storytelling festival on Oct.11, 2007. Ireally enjoyed your stories. I have to tell stories for black history month. I tell humerous stories , mostly about animals. Do you know any stories , Africian-Americian stories thatr are humerous. I've told people about you. This is the way I feel, we are both storytellers, we have our very own style, it does not hurt me to try to help another storyteller. I get a great joy from helping others too. Even if you dop not have a story for me, I'm glad I found you website. Write me sometimes amd let me know what you are doing. Barbara Lott

A Wonderful Gift for Children and Adults
author: j.d. walker
I bought this for my five year old niece who lives a few states away from me. When it arrived, I couldn't resist opening it myself and listening to Asha Baba's wonderful story tales accompanied by beautiful African music, rhythms, and drums! The stories are lively and entertaining, and I am sure any parent or child will enjoy--whether alone, on road trips, or right before heading off to sleep. Listening to the music made me want to take an Afro-Hatian dance class, and to sign my niece up too when she gets a little bit older! Congratulations!
