Storyteller Asha's Baba is a practitioner of the ancient West African Bardic Tradition, Jaliyaa. Jaliyaa, as an art form, encompasses a broad range of creative disciplines: the telling of tales, recitation of epic and heroic poems, singing and study of traditional songs. Baba's mission, and challenge, as an artist, is to interpret this ancient art form into an educational/entertaining body of work enjoyed by western audiences, without degrading its valuable heritage/traditions. Baba travels throughout the country, performing for every type of cultural and social gathering imaginable: traditional African naming ceremonies for newborn babies, traditional weddings, rituals and burials. He also tours aspects of this art form to elementary/secondary schools, Colleges and Universities as well as public/private institutions (i.e. parks and recreation, libraries, human resource division programming for corporations, etc.) Jaliyaa Buka Ban!
