Since beginning their careers together over 30 years ago Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson have become one of the most prolific and versatile couples in recording history. Combining skills as performers, songwriters and producers, they have created an unprecedented catalog of chart-topping hit singles and albums. Some of their hits include "Let's Go Get Stoned," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "You're All I Need To Get By," "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing," "Solid," "I'm Every Woman," "Reach Out And Touch Somebody's Hand". They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame June 2002. They are married with two daughters. According to the London Guardian, "It's one thing to write a love song, it's another to convince an audience you inhabit one"

    It's great. I purchased this 3 times from vinyl revolution, so that I could put it on my ipod. Each record was well worn. I spent over $300.00 and still did not have clear content. Thank you, thank you!! I'm sure I'm not alone when I say; "I Wanna be Selfish." I'd love to own everything they did together.

    I haven't heard this album for 30 years*.It was an 'album' way back then (too early for cd's)!Been tying to get hold of it for THE LAST 5 YEARS until I got onto this site.It is still the sweeeetest groove and it lifts you in all kind of ways.Glad I found it again. * I'm 45 now!

    It is so great to have this on CD. I have the orginal album but have gotten lazy about spinning vinyl so was thrilled when I found this on CD Baby. I think it's one of their best albums. I really hope they put out more of their work on CD. You just don't hear music like this any more.

    I first fell in love with Gimme Something Real in the early 70s at about the same time I fell in love on my living room floor with my girlfriend at the time. She got away and so did my copy of this wonderful lp. I at least have reclaimed one of them.

    I have been a fan of Nick and Valerie's since their days as songwriters at Motown. I absolutely loved Valerie's two solo albums, so when "Gimme Something Real" first came out on vinyl I bought it immediately. I loved it then and I love it now. Now "I Wanna Be Selfish" needs to come out on CD as the perfect companion to this incredible disc!

    This is a must have collection, as the first effort out of the blocks for A&S. Great songs. Great performances. Mastering is extra clean. Packaging is well above average with easy to read liner notes and lyrics. This was well worth the wait since 1973. When do we get the other unreleased albums?

    I bought this album in the 70's and played it until the scratches would no longer allow me to. It is now 2004, and I could not be happier that with new technology, CDs do not wear out! In any case, this certainly is a favorite album of mine and reminds me of the intimate kind of love than can last a lifetime. I was extremely pleased to finally have found this album on CD and be able to resuscitate memories of good times and create new ones.

    From the moment I heard a coworker playing her cassette of this back in the early 70's, I was hooked. It will always be my favorite A&S album. The lyrics meant so much to me at the time and now bring back wonderful memories.

    This dynamic duo made its debut with this 1973 recording. Compared to the lush production of latter albums, GIMME SOMETHING REAL is a low-key affair featuring Valerie's gospel piano playing, Nick's thoughtful lyrics, and gorgeous harmonies from both participants. I WANNA BE SELFISH and COME AS YOU ARE should be released on cd also (A&S are you listening?)

    This CD is AWESOME!!!! My favorite songs are the title track Gimme Somethin Real, Aint That Good Enough, Have You Tried, and Anywhere. Ashford & Simpson you definitely gave me SOMETHIN REAL.     Just a quick line to say that Gimme Something Real is my least known A&S recording. Needless to say, I am upset that I didn't listen to my mother's vinyl when I had the opportunity. A&S showcase some of their best music on this CD/album. You can tell that they would only get better with time, which they did. A&S, if you are thinking about releasing Come As You Are, please do. I am first in line to get that masterpiece also. Thank you for making beautiful beautiful music.

    Finally...on the CD and back again! When this album first came out in 1972-3, my ex boyfriend had me listen to it...his way of parting with closure. I bought it that day and would buy it four more times on vinyl. I have ten albums by Ashford & Simpson and have begun to look for CD's, alas no "Give Me Something Real" until now. Thank you, thank you, thank you so very much for getting this on CD...though many people give it a bad review over all in the music industry...as a consumer, I find it to be one of their greatest works that prepared the way for work done later by them. It is a must have for your collection; even if it is the only one of their albums you get. I'm ordering two just to be on the safe side...again, thank you so very much. Enjoy the music folks...music today is just not the way it use to be...too bad...but then again; I am getting older. Have a great day everyone and remember to smile. Parks

  • A&S Gave Me Something Real First Time I Heard It.

    As I said in my review of Performance, I have every album Nick & Val ever recorded (vinyl, remember vinyl?). I also own every album currently available on CD. Gimme Something Real was not the first time I heard Valerie's voice. I had heard her on the Quincy Jones albums as well as her Motown solo work. It was the first time, however, I had heard Nick in the foreground (he was a strong presence on background in Miss Ross's solo debut, remember "You're all....I need...to get by...uh, huh"). I loved Gimme Something Real because it was REAL and it was a love fest (like most A&S tunes). And it was sexy and religious all at the same time. If I had to pick one tune, it would be the title song. If I can pick another, how about, "I Need Your Light". The music scene today can't match Nick & Val at their best. This is one of the best. Please don't stop recording. I need your light............

    I did not know what to expect. I thought I heard every song they wrote on an album they did. The cd was smooth and the production was very good. The lyrics were so true on many of the songs. Bend Me made me think of how you feel at the beginning of a good relationship.

    Classic 1st lp from Ashford & Simpson is a joy from start to finish. Intelligent lyrics, excellent production that showcases the SINGERS and classy arrangements make for an all-around musical feast. Cd opens up with "Bend Me" a crowd favorite from back in the day and continues in a non-stop groove until the finale of "Anywhere" (my personal favorite). Folks who are old enough may remember the music from the last track was featured in a (beer?) commercial, if I'm not mistaken for Michelob. At any rate, a most excellent choice for the A&S fan or newcomer alike. Can't wait for the other releases!!

    Every song goes straight in to your heart. It´s a kind of music I would like to hear more in the future. A song from the 70´s can sometimes feel dated, but this is pure quality all the way!

    This is one of those priceless gems from the 70's recorded when music was still music and lawyers, accountants and Panels of Experts didn't make artistic decisions. It holds up just as well today as the music and lyrics are creative, interesting and intelligent and all about love and human relationships. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
