Life is all about doing what you can with what you have right now. Those who make it farther are those who know how to be resourceful, and when one door closes they look for another option immediately. There are moments that are so small and minuscule we think it won’t make a difference to the bigger picture. It’s tempting to let those moments pass by you, but those are the most important of all. Steve Jobs once said, “Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” For me, that is what the ‘Satisfy You’ EP release is all about. I cannot see how everything will connect for my dream right now, but I know that it will one day and somehow.
I don’t believe in debt. Period. I am a strong advocate for paying for everything in cash. I’m a bit stubborn in that I like to be fully self-sufficient, no matter what. In 2010, I started an online used bookseller business called Hill Street Books on amazon.com. I ran it for approximately 8 months and made a decent amount of cash. In 2011, I worked at a church as a singer on a weekly basis for around four months. I took part in both of these while working full-time and going to school part-time. I knew I needed a ‘music fund’ of sorts, without having any idea what all of my hard work would be used for in the future.
It is extremely expensive to create an album, even in the days of home recording. For a while, I told myself I was going to wait until I could release the first album to get music to you, but then one day I woke up and saw the light. There is absolutely nothing wrong with releasing a 2-song EP for right now. It’s all about doing what I can with what I have, and that is exactly what I did.
All the years of efforts I made were all for you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for waiting so patiently and sticking by your belief in the music and my voice. I am extremely grateful for all of your support.
I hope you enjoy the fruits of the retro-soul underdog (meaning me :P). Please share the music, youtube videos, and/or this blog post, with your friends. If you want me to keep making music, I’m really going to need your help to get the ‘Satisfy You’ EP out there for the world to hear.
Thank you for everything,
Ashley Spencer
