Album Notes

Over the years the focus of the outfit has been on members Randall Lee (ex Cannanes/Nice,Sydney) Carla Bruce (Space rockers Sabalon Glitz, Chicago) and Jay Niimi (Kingsize studios, Chicago), who trade countries and collect musicians (eg. Liz Phair, Dave Crawford, Cath Cole)to create an ever-changing Ashtray Boy sound. Their recordings also adopt this nature with sessions sometimes initiated and tracked in New Zealand, overdubbed in Australia and mixed in the US. The group have toured extensively in North America since 1994 on bills including Oasis, Liz Phair, the Spinnanes, Red Red Meat, Magnetic Fields, Holiday and Aden. More recently, they diverted their attentions on releases and touring in Europe, Japan and Australia, broadening their listening audience. The press follows these movements with earlier features in the USA by Option, Spin, Magnet, Raygun, CMJ, and more recently in Europe and Japan by Rolling Stone(Germany), Superstar(Germany), Musik Express(Germany), Inrockuptibles (France), Select(UK), Melody Maker(UK), Cookie Scene (Japan) and Inoiza (Japan).

Musically AB have been described as generating "a relaxed mildly hypnotic wrist-happy strum, shambolic drumming, subtle supportive bass", awash with "Lee's heavily accented, hard to describe vocals" (Puncture). Comparisons range from the Verlaines, Edwyn Collins, New Order, and the Go-Betweens to the Fairport Convention, Nancy Sinatra, and Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening/Halobenders/Dub Narcotic).
