Fusing frenzied jazz with a bright, two-step kick, Baja, CA,
live electronic group Niño Astronauta is the project of former Nortec Collective
member Ignacio Chavez (programming, keyboards - kobol)
Tati (bass- Acida) and Argel Cota (drums- Acida, kobol Dream comet.
Like much-heralded British electronic prodigy Squarepusher,
Niño Astronauta finds its groove best onstage, meshing its sparse instrumentation
into something kinky and kinetic. And tastemakers are starting to take notice —
the illustrious John Tejada recently remixed their song "San Fernando Rd."
Touring in support of their self-titled debut, the band's warm,
flowing melodies provide a nice West Coast counterpoint to Germany's oppressively trendy,
glitch-heavy beats. (PS)

jazz-dipped, broken beat groovathons
author: FLAVORPILL
It's rare for an electronic act to have an exciting live show without relying on visuals, dancers, or chemically-induced exuberance on the part of the crowd.
The exception that proves the rule, Niño Astronauta whip their audience into a trance. Ok, yes, they do cheat a little; their jazz-dipped, broken beat groovathons are concocted with live bass, drums, and guestvocalists. Originally from Ensenada, Mexico,
the trio have built a following based on the loose party atmosphere of their live performances.

That rhythm section is right in the pocket.
author: mark
Nino Astronauta (what a great name, right?) is three guys: Tati on the bass, Nashio on the sampler, guitar, keys, etc, and Argel on the drums. There's actually a live version of San Fernando Rd. on the single that's pretty amazing. I love it when electronic acts are able to pull off a good live sound -- and having live drums really helps a lot.
That rhythm section is right in the pocket. It reminds me of so many things, but it remains it's own entity entirely. The full-length is also pretty amazing. It's kind of jazzy in some respects,.
*****/recommended.
