ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Formed in 2004 in Boston, a’tris released their debut album, appeal, in November of 2005. appeal features songs familiar to their live show fans including “Green Land,” “Duality,” and “Cactus Bride.” a’tris’ influences include R.E.M., Radiohead, the Pixies, Peter Gabriel and David Bowie. The a’tris sound has been compared to Coldplay, the Killers and Snow Patrol.

a’tris is the brainchild of Mason Taylor, from the Berklee College of Music, and producer/songwriter Michael Kreher. Taylor, who is a’tris’ front man, keyboardist and primary songwriter, said the band is “very fortunate to be able to release [their] debut” on Mark Records. Mark Records has worked with such musical icons as the Goo Goo Dolls, 10,000 Maniacs, and countless others. The company has been awarded over sixty (60) Grammy Entry List appearances, and two Grammy Nominations.

simply the best rock act out of Boston
Great, great album. But I wouldn't focus so much of this band's successful debut sound entirely on Mason Taylor...the players are really great, as anyone who has attended an a'tris show would have noticed. If this band interests you, attending their live concert is a must. It's a band that has to be experienced live. 5 stars, straight all the way through.

Appeal
this band is incredible!...omg i would love to see them live..Mason blows me to pieces with the sheer quality of his voice and expression...this is the best rock act i've ever heard from America...they don't even sound American...the lyrics and arrangements are AWESOME!
this band are gonna acheive all they want to...
the sheer quality and unselfishness of their expression will be their anchor and light...
totally love the songwriting...wonderful super graceful intense challenging beautiful music..

This CD's sound reminds me of Radiohead's approach to their music. The music explores the artist's intense emotional and musical range. This is not a "one hit, one sound" band. All songs have their individual attitude.

Can't wait for their live show to hit the Bay Area.

Punk rock gone smart
"Appeal" has plenty of appeal, most of it based on Taylor's voice - a blend of theatricality, emotion and chops, with nods (intentional or otherwise) to Rufus Wainwright and Morrissey, Michael Stipe and Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard. It's moody and dramatic stuff, and Taylor makes a welcome tour guide throughout.

More than merely a vehicle for Taylor's readily apparent talents, however, "Appeal" is a full-blown cinematic rock record - and here is the spot where I succumb to the inevitable, and name-drop Radiohead. Sorry. It can't be helped. There's a school of filmlike, grainy alterna-rock-noir that has developed since the release of that band's "OK Computer." Every serious record-maker working in the rock genre today has familiarized themselves with that album. Its influence runs deep, and indeed, pokes its head through during segments of the a'tris disc.

Happily, "Appeal" is not in the business of offering carbon-copies of Taylor's myriad musical influences. You can find those influences, should you desire to do so. But a much more advisable, and enjoyable, track to take involves simply listening to the album repeatedly and letting its eminent musicality wash over you. In today's musical environment, that's being totally punk rock.

Best band ever!!!
I agree with the review below me. Their cd is amazing, but if you haven't seen them live, you are missing out on much more. Acoustic or full band, they will blow you away. This cd is original and different from the normal.
