Album Notes

Machine Tribe Recordings and The Sound-O-Mat are proud to present 'evergone', a collaborative effort between Abstract Audio Systems of New York City and ambient composers Austere, from Portland, Ore. Moving, evolving ambient musick that stays on the edge of "ambient" but continues to engage the listener at all times.

The raw sound materials for this 6 track CD were provided by Austere and subsequently manipulated and sequenced by AAS. The result is an ambient work inspired by the ideas of space and distance.

These cold reaches can be heard in 'exo-bio', while 'blu" and 'atul' speak of the ocean's depths and the wildness of the unexplored. "blackfilm" and "unquiet" are much more claustrophobic, each mapping some secret, inner space that we ourselves are sometimes afraid to explore. The title track returns us to the light and reminds us of the comfortable spaces we build around ourselves. For more information, please visit the links below:

Austere
A Biography
By Bill Binkleman
Wind & Wire magazine
http://www.windandwire.com

Austere is an enigmatic duo who record some of the more interesting ambient music I've heard in my six plus years of reviewing. From the swirling drones (I was gonna say "dark" drones, but...) and eerie melancholy of Monodia to the warmth and beauty amidst minimalism of Fade to the cool glitch beats and samples of one of Austere's side project's The Mystifying Oracle's Quintessence (see my review here:
http://www.windandwire.com/may/quintessence.htm)

Austere are less concerned with following the path and more concerned with breaking new ground. However, they are undoubtedly enigmatic, as one would glean from the above, and shun the spotlights of media and personality. However, in my many communiques with them, I have found few artists in this industry who are more polite, engaging, genuine or friendly. If only some of the more "exposed" artists in ambient music were as humble and humane.

Check them out at http://www.austere.org and read more reviews of their work by yours truly here at http://www.windandwire.com.

There, now you and others know as much about Austere as anyone!

A Great Collaboration with Abstract Audio Systems
author: Forrest (SunDummy)

This has an alien / robotic thing going on. I like the bleeps and blips; not IDM-y, more like strange voices. ''unquiet'' sounds like huge spaceship engines warming up, 1000 decks below. ''atul'' is like a dense alien jungle, full of twittering insects and birds. ''evergone'' is a nice ending, sounds like an alien radio transmission. Cool stuff! There is almost a sense of 'language' to the sounds, like they're trying to tell me something....

A Scary Collaboration from Austere with Abstract Audio Systems
author: Gordon Danis

This is the collaboration with Abstract Audio Sytems. The music is a bit glitchy and disjointed but not distressingly so. "Unquiet" is downright scary, but "Evergone" is a nice closing track (nothing like Martin Luther King to send you off.) I'd love to have some of the drugs you guys were on when you made this CD, ha ha! Some nice quiet tracks but mostly darker, to me, but I think a lot of ambient music is kinda scary (which I like.)

powerful music, eery but extremely beautiful. i can almost feel the weird vastness of the ocean when listening to this. one of the best albums i've heard this year, and not quite like anything else, even austere's other releases. i can't recommend this enough.
