Album Notes

"Anthony VanVranken describes his music with appropriate efficiency-as "minimal ambient electronic with beats," programmed instrumental suites with one-word names and little human interface. Electronica's not an easy genre to coax warmth or personality from, but AVV's 15-cut Shift actually breathes and flows with surprising vibrancy, like a cyborg DJ discovering his own blood. Most tracks are clinically clean, making static dirty deviations like the title cut stand out even more--highly recommended for cubicle farmers."

-Bill Frost, City Weekly, January 29th, 2004

"Shift continues where Flow left off, with beats as minimal and austere as the CD cover art and electronica staccato stresses, but with extra decoratative synths to fill it out and beef it up. Shift seems a little more advanced, a little more technical than Flow, but still retains that seductively contradictory warm yet machine-like sound. "Rut" is an especially pleasing song with a catchy vibe, while "Anew" plunges you back into a wash of somber self-introspection. Echoey voice samples before the title track set a splendid gloomy mood and veer you into a dark, futuristic canyon of industrial waste. A.VanVranken released Shift in december, so pick up your juicy copy ASAP."

Just can't stop listening...

I got this CD a couple of weeks ago, and I find myself playing it again and again. There is great care and craft in the sounds of each piece - often sounding somewhere between Kraftwerk and Aphex Twin - and the layering of sound has me hearing something new each time I listen to the CD. The mix of digital and analog-sounding elements is excellent, and the beats are just right - often very spare and intriguing. I find that it's good to listen to at work, while driving, or while just chilling out. Two of my favorite tracks are Nice (#1, very sweet and melodic) and track #3, Rut (fantastic beats and twisty synthesizer). The presentation of the CD is great, as well, but I think I've said enough - get your copy now!
