Avatar's words wind snake-like over the beat as he leads listeners through a range of topics, using hip hop as a means to vent his frustrations as an artist. Ever since the early nineties, he has been involved in underground hip hop & applied his DIY ethic to every project that he has touched. Whereas most m.c.s have a signature style, cadence and rhyme scheme, Avatar tends to let his style change with each song, to better complement the production values of the works as he undergoes schizophrenic transformations on the microphone. Currently performing along side longtime cohorts the Cosmic Truckaz, Avatar first made a name for himself with L.A. club favorites the Underlords, and since his departure has released two solo albums: "Republik"(2000) and "Double Negative Pt. I: For Lack of a Better World" (2003), the latter of which was chosen as the Amoeba Music Home Grown Selection in October of 2003. He has also earned respect as a producer, crafting beats for Ex Vandalz (Shapeshifters crew), Akuma (Shapeshifters, Chainsmokers), Elevated Grounds and many others. 2004 promises to be a busy year, as Avatar intends to release two full-length albums ("Deas Ex Machina" produced by DJ Obi, and State of the Art's "Quintessential" produced by Presto), as well as producing a compilation to showcase the best underground talent in Los Angeles. Stay tuned.

His music is harsh, it's crude and it's rough around the edges
author: tadahAs a firm believer in the influence the weather has on a person's character, emotions and mood, I wonder where LA is in Avatar's music...Avatar sounds like he's forever stuck in June Haze. His music is gritty, it does a science fiction industrialism that he and curiously enough some other LA cats like to do. His music is harsh, it's crude and it's rough around the edges...and when we turn away from this rough description of the overall feel (that's pretty much based on the beat and delivery), we find that the troubling continues with the lyrics. And here we learn that even under the sun we have the same problems.

author: Kevin, Amoeba MusicAn LA rapper by way of the Bay, Avatar delivers rhymes that recount the day to day drudgery an artist encounters in his struggle to stay sane in an insane world. A struggle that always seems to reap the greatest artistic rewards, as witnessed on this album
Avatar displays a wealth of knowledge in societal issues and doesn’t stutter whi
author: M Jane San BuenaventuraOne can say that an emcee’s lyrics pose as their resume of personal life experiences. It’s natural to feel like you’re learning a little more about that person, that you’re tapping into their mind and the kinds of issues they confront in everyday life. Yet while listening to the bulk of today’s mainstream hiphop artists, it’s almost too easy to assess that these emcees’ personal lives consist of watching MTV programming and that the issues they confront include fitting the data gathered at focus groups of fifteen-year-old girls into their lyrics. Refreshingly, the opposite is true about Avatar’s debut album, Double Negative Part I. Avatar displays a wealth of knowledge in societal issues and doesn’t stutter while spitting his opinions on them either. Not only does Avatar have a lot to say on this album, the flow of his rhymes confidently keeps up with, if not speaks faster than his already quick wit. As for the beats, it would be shortsighted to compare them to any one “genre” of style. An eclectic variety of beats are what envelopes Avatar’s speech, not to mention enhances the disposition of each subject he presents to listeners. While he confronts subjects such as the backlash of celebrity, tackling authority, and the pursuit of happiness, the beats that accompany his message create a modern, lulling balance between the two that makes this an altogether ultra-positive piece of work.
