notes
A vocalist with impressive pipes and an uncanny ear for the soulful language of 40's, 50's and 60's hipsters, swingsters and R&B songsters.
With authentic R&B, traditional blues, Sugar Mama gives you her heart and soul.
This album is filled with amazing purity of genre and grace of intention. Produced by Linda Tillery, and featuring Ruth Davies on acoustic Bass, Jules Broussard on saxophone and Deszon Claiborne on drums, the band has great chemistry and finds a groove a mile wide. Gwen is a master of the blues, a mix of Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Nina Simone and Etta James.
Born into a musical family, Gwen grew up in a juke joint owned by her grandmother in the small steel town of Verona Pennsylvania, where she soaked up the rich gospel, r&b, and blues traditions of the itinerant musicians that would pass through.
"It's familiar, like an old friend" Kim Koeninghaus, Rose Street House of Music"
"Where did you get that beautiful arrangement on Suzanne?" Ann Hackler, Institute for Musical Arts
"Gwen has impressive pipes, her songs are heartfelt and soulful. Have you thought about going mainstream?" Beatnit.com executive
"I put the album on and listened to it for 8 hours straight while painting my house!" a fan
"Really captures Gwen's personality" Stephanie Reif, Santa Rosa Media Center television director

authentic R&B - traditional blues - an amazing vocalist!
Best I have heard in a long time. Right on the mark.
author: Nate CardozaThis CD has the true mark of what it means to impress. If this were my CD it would be my proudest achievment to date. I had to share with my friends after listening to it and people just said wow who is that! I listened to it many times already! Great, just great!
Strictly killers, no fillers
author: Jos Van Den Boom, Brto-radio, HollandWe’re talking value for money here. No less than 12 blues and soulsongs, sung by a one of the best female singers in this style I’ve heard for years. Gwen’s songbook includes strictly killers, no fillers! Six out of 12 of the Sugar Mama songs were written by Gwen herself. The other songs betray that Gwen and her executive producer Emily Tincher have a nose for picking out the best material. Come what may: this record will be on my playlist for a long, long time!
Gwens CD is long overdue, an authentic blues singer with a pure love of the genr
author: Victory Music ReviewDon't know why it's taken so long for this master of the blues to treat our souls to this one. Avery's been on the circuit some 30 years and every bit of her love for this music is cut into this CD. Six originals, including "Sugar Mama 2K", "Marianne" and "You'll Find Love" and "I'm On My Way", and six traditionals including Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia On My Mind" and Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" (I especially loved this arrangement...)fill this album with amazing purity of genre and grace of intention. Arranged by Linda Tillery, this CD presents Avery's life-long love of the blues, and her unmistakable infectious laugh. Absolutely Necessary (Nicki Ehrlich)
