Album Notes

"Something's gone beautifully AwRY. Awry's frontwoman, Shara Worden, can do many things. Imagine a woman with a degree in Opera, accompanying herself with either her crunchy sounding Telecaster guitar, or her vibey Fender Rhodes. Her voice reminds you of a ranting Yma Sumac rocking as hard as Ms. PJ Harvey with a slight touch of Bjork's otherworldly funkiness."
-Digital City, Dave Hill

"Quiet B Sides", an intimate project recorded in a mere 3 days, showcases AwRY's experimental guitar work & "first take" emotion. Electric guitar sounds are generated by thimbles & pencil slides while wurlizer, tabla, toy microphone, air organ & autoharp make understated appearances. Shara's vocals transport with transparent playfulness & beauty as she pushes the limits of her voice through tears & giggles. Though its a brief dip into softer sounds, AwRY still manages to push the dark forest edges of popular music.

Hint: Night time. "Quiet B Sides" is the record for you if you need a peaceful place before sleeping.

Hint: Daytime. If you are looking for AwRY's full band sound then check out the "Untitled" release from February 2001 (See the left hand panel in Other CDs or in the Gallery section).

I definitely love Shara. I was so lucky to meet her in Italy this year and I really enjoy her songs. This album is simply BEAUTIFUL.

Worth checking out

I bought this cd to hear the proto-version of Riding Horses. I really dig the orange album, and so I expected to like this too. I think you can hear Shara approaching My Brightest Diamond material here. The vocals are great, but they are far more restrained than anything on the Orange album. The instrumentation is similarly muted and the releases are more controlled. Loved the wurlitzer on Riding Horses. Loved the opening line of "Pull the Bars" that dances around the word "heart."

Quite a grand compact disc...

Quite good, to say the least. Really chilled out and such. One song, in particular, that I think makes the whole purchase worthwhile, "Caged Bird". That song is quite unbelievably wonderful. Worth all 1250 pennies...and the 250 pennies for shipping.

Composition, arrangements and voice came together from Heaven

This is the rower and more experimental music by Shara Worden I've known. Both Awry albums are excellent, but I think Quiet B-Sides represents a complete freedom to make you feel mood and history through and into the music, in a very honest way. Maybe I feel this, because I guess Shara took more careful in scholastic structures and instrumentation for other Awry album, as well as My Brightest Diamond one. If you like new ways of expression, deeply avant-garde, full of personal character of a great, a really great artist, try any Awry and My Brightest Diamond album.
