His Blues are RAW, His Blues are PRIMAL....A trip to the Delta for your EARS!
It's all very basic recording with no overdubs, recreating a
live feel of the Delta. I did this as an homage to the old Library of Congress field recordings ..with over 25 yrs of gigging experience.........I've been all around this piece of dirt called earth, From the subways of NYC to the Amazon Riverboats of Manaus... performing and entertaining for the people...I 've worked very hard to get to the musical place of awareness i now have to share with all my new listeners...........
The late Great Dave Van Ronk (mayor of Greenwich village)once said of Axe Masterson....
"when you can play any kind of music you want Axeman , i have no idea why you'd pick this, but i'm sure glad you did"

Roots and wings
author: Resonator Ghost
I count myself among the fans of Axe Masterson. The beauty of this release is not only in the great Delta blues sound, but in the variety of the music. Axe Masterson's voice and guitar show a deep knowledge of the Delta Blues, as shown in the husky tones of "32-20 Blues". You can almost hear this one being played on a windup Edison phonograph. The beautiful "Louis Collins" comes with an entirely different guitar sound and shows off the higher range of Masterson's voice. It's true to the style and spirit of Mississippi John Hurt, and that's a high tribute. Listen for the trademark vocal dropouts where he lets the guitar sing the line. It's a Mississippi John Hurt signature and Masterson does it perfectly. My personal favorite is his take on "Sitting on top of the World". That covers the roots. Now for the wings: I am assuming here that "Shiny Creek Bounce" Parts 1 & 3 are original compositions. These two cuts show another side of Axe Masterson's command of his material--this time flying on his own. When cut 11 was over, I found myself wanting more. Solution: spin it again. You'll enjoy this one.
