Axis 1 brings a powerful burst of realism to progressive songwriting. Look for a deeper, wider sonic bed of guitar extravagance than in "You Will Set Me Free" and "Where Have I Gone" and see where your listening takes you-- comparisons are pointless, so you can make your own before you decide how hot it is.
Then listen to "Too Hot" for down and dirty barroom swagger lit up by these same pyrotechnics. In harmony with the explosive rockers there is, indeed, immediate and elegant balladry, artistically arranged in contemporary modes and strikingly original-- no sophomoric heart wrenching here, but straight-on, look-you-dead-in-the-eye experience, delivered with wit and style. Consider the honesty of "Head Hung Low", "My Solar System's Sun", "That Look In Your Eye", and "Death Is...". Each track has a tale to tell, a hard truth told from a spirited and tough-minded point of view. Yeah, lyrics matter, especially when they're delivered with the emotional authority and passion found in these vocals. This is the real thing, a genuine full-length album covering a wide spectrum of emotions and musical adventures. TURNED UPSIDE DOWN takes you with it from start to finish and leaves you glad you took the ride. It is absolutely a solid rock, a great and accomplished piece of work. From Scott of the Dark Ryders.

When you first listen to Turned Upside Down, you make a connection on an emotional level--this is songwriting from the gut. Gary Neilsen has the ability to reach out and touch your feelings when you least expect it. Each song has its own texture from the celebratory Believe In Yourself to the morosely dark Death Is... You feel like you've come to know this guy personally through listening to his songs. This disc features some excellent musicianship and all the songs are really well-orchestrated and tightly arranged. This is an excellent debut CD; Axis 1 is certainly an act to keep an eye on in the future!
