Album Notes

Phanai Records and emPOWERment Records are proud to announce the release of Ayisha Knight's debut music spoken word album, entitled "Until".

Ayisha is a multi-talented poet, actress, photographer, American Sign Language (ASL) teacher and ASL storyteller. She is also profoundly deaf. She is the daughter of a white Jewish woman and a Black Cherokee father by birth, and grew up in a community of single mothers. At last count, fifteen mothers, three fathers, and numerous brothers and sisters all form part of a happily unconventional family.

It is with amazing courage that Ayisha has chosen to embark on what is likely to be the first music spoken word album released by a Deaf poet. The album features the music of Producer Francis Phan and the spoken and sung performances of Blackout Boston's Toni Asante Lightfoot, Nuri Chandler Smith, Oz Okoawo, Alex King and Giselle O'Brady.

Ayisha weaves intricate poems touching upon struggle and healing transformation with regards to race, identity, and sexual abuse.

Until - An Artistic Gem!
author:
Ayisha Knight's debut release, Until, delivers a highly introspective journey into the experiences of the multi-racial, deaf spoken word poet. A deeply intense performance, Until reveals the artist's mesmerizing ability to convey vulnerability, insight, and strength through her lyrical narratives. The tracks of Until serve as the listener's passport to highly personal stories of Knight's life. She haunts audiences with her stories about sexual abuse and incest (Pass It On), multi-racial identity (Ebony), and womanhood (Brailed Flesh). With its influence of wistful, dream-like instrumentation and arrangement as a musical backdrop, Until showcases the talents of several BlackOut Boston Arts Collective artists. They deliver performances as brilliant as the lyrical messages penned by Knight. Until is an artistic gem!
