Babik Delivers!
author: Eric Miller
Babik delivers and the wait has been worth it! American Gypsy brings you right back to the smokey jazz rooms of 1940s in Paris, except the sound is crystal clear.
Stephanie's Stomp penned by Stuart Fuchs sounds like a classic Grappelli and Reinhardt melodic tune. Chipotle draws you in with it's compelling rhythm, haunting melody, sweet harmonies and ripping solos! After You've Gone sends you back to days of the well-worn vinyl LPs with an old phonograph start and Joshua's classic vocal style. Norwood Nights could be new standard with it's comfortable minor evening feel and Geoffrey's inspiring violin solos flowing seamlessly into Stuart's flying guitar riffs. Likewise, Stuart's San Juanillo showcases the Babik's instrumental virtuosity with hot lines and tight harmonies on the strings. From the slow jazz to energizing stomps, American Gypsy is one of a kind and not to be missed.

Harmonic grace. Passionate performance. Electrifying delivery. It's difficult to overstate the ecstatic feel of this album which is not only a delight to listen to, but also makes you want to move your feet and body as well. Most albums become predictable after one or two selections, but American gypsy keeps moving into new and exciting places. It's very clear these musicians are not only comfortable with each other and their instruments, but that they are, at each moment, listening to and playing closely to each other, resulting in a joyous celebration of this genre of music.
Excellence in musicianship here is the key - done with an ease and smoothness that is hard to find. Babik's standard quartet is accompanied this time around with a marvelous sultry female vocalist (Heather Hodson), in "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" and mind-blowing accordionist, Vladimir Mollov. I couldn't find a thing to not like about this miracle of sound. With profound thanks to its creators, I say it doesn't get any better than this. Run, don't walk. Dance, don't sit.
