Album Notes

Metasonic is the result of a process. A particular configuration of gear, approached in a particular manner, by one particular person, in a particular set of places, under the scrutiny and particular expectations of several particular groups of people. It is a document of those times and places. The power and charm of the work come from the live character of it.

extremely cool cd

Love this record. It's really great for just kicking back and relaxing, or for adding a groovy mood to a room. It's got a couple of shockers on it just to keep you on your toes. Doesn't sound like guitar to me, but that's cool.

Remarkable guitar work. Highly inventive.

Jonathan Badger’s “Metasonic” is a beautiful collection of gently throbbing meditations. This is an unlikely use of the guitar, which in fact doesn’t sound much like guitar at all except that it does transmit the spirit of rock, even “garage rock,” in an ambient mode. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything quite like it. The lo-fi processing seems to exploit electronic (or digital?) artifacts, transforming them into pulses of rhythm and texture. What I also appreciate about it is the judicious and measured tastefulness of these little pieces. Many of them are poignant vignettes that yield very specific atmospheres with great economy of execution. Despite the limited palette of solo guitar, there is great inventiveness and variety here. Each track is unique, and just when you think you have Badger’s style figured out something unexpected walks onstage. His eclectic approach to ambient is reminiscent of early Brian Eno records, where moods abruptly shift and things come out of nowhere, but the idiosyncratic guitar style gives this a smooth, fresh sound. Definitely a new take on electronica.
