Baghdad Scuba Review : Breathe

The new album shows more musical diversity than one would expect from an often mis-categorized "hippie jam band". Loud guitars and 3 part harmonies are often the staple of BSR, but Breathe shows other elements like the techno jam of "Busted", reserved lo-fi of "Dream" and "Ooh Ahh", the tongue twisting rap of "Dormant", and the Americana electric bluegrass feel of "Day Breaks".

Album Notes

Breathe

Weighing in at over 60 minutes, Breathe consists of 13 original tracks, many of which the band has been playing live for months or even years. Some are already crowd favorites showing up on live recordings and youtube videos. However, the album versions are crisp, recording studio quality renditions thanks to longtime recording engineer Mark Weber (Pressure Wall, formerly with DNA) who spent over a year working with the 6 piece group to get the live band sound down to digital. Equally impressive artwork design for the album was done by Steven Welch (Madison Magazine) and Josh Meier (Mad Rollin' Dolls swag-master). Click here for album details and purchasing info.

DIVING DEEPER INTO BEING
"Being" is one of the most emotional songs I have ever written. It was created on a sunny spring morning in 08 while sitting with my daughter Layla on the back patio. I had just finished reading Eckhart Tolles "A New Earth" and was treasuring the moment as the sun delightfully warmed my soul. The track is a statement of presence and peace. So many days, months, years can go by with us doing, doing, doing and never taking the time to "be". I hope as you listen to the track you can take some time to "be" even if it is just for a few moments. Best wishes to all!!!

DIVING DEEPER INTO "WHERE ARE YOU?"

The creation of this song is especially memorable to me. John called me one day and said he was on my side of town and wanted to know if I felt like hanging out. I told him to stop over, and when he got to my place we decided out of the blue to write a song. I had recently written a guitar riff (a bunch of spaced out power chords thrown together) that we used for the verse and chorus. John and I went to work on the melody. I had an old 4-track that we recorded the vocals with using scat-like-nonsense in place of the lyrics that hadn't been written yet that we formed the parts and harmonies with including the back and forth in the chorus. Then we wrote the lyrics and after just a few hours we had a finished song. While this may sound like we just slapped a song together, I find myself struggling with how to convey the feeling in that room as all these ideas and parts just floated around until it all fell nice and neatly into this pile of music that became a song.

DIVING DEEPER INTO "HERE"

The working title for "Here" was "Finish the Riff". I was messing around on the piano at home before band practice and came up with the riff that is the first and last 2 measures of this song. When I got to band practice, I played the 2 bars for the band asked the them to finish the riff. We messed around for a while and the verse started to form. The next week, John came with a chorus and lyrics. We combined everything and the song went through several arrangements until it settled into what you hear on the album today.
