This compact disc contains recordings made in Bali in 1970 by Gertrude Rivers Robinson, a student in the UCLA ethnomusicology department. The first four items are from the repertoire of the gamelan gong kebyar of village of Peliatan and were originally released as a long-play record in 1973 by the UCLA Institute of Ethnomusicology with the title Bali South (IE Records IER-7503). The other five items, from the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive, are released here for the first time and are examples of gamelan angklung from the village of Tunjuk.

Amazing Musicianship
author: Greg TurnerI have a gamelan of my own and I can tell you this stuff is difficult but even if you didn't know, the sound is simply fantastic. For me, nothing anywhere in the world even comes close. The sound quality is not the finest but it just ads more charm to this recording. Considering what they had to work with at the time though, its superb.

Traditionally known for its fast, interlocking rhythmic patterns and breathless speed, much more so than Javanese gamelan, the dazzling quality of Balinese music is superbly captured in this 1970s field recording by ethnomusicologist, Gertrude Rivers Robinson, and the UCLA Ethnomusicology archive.
Valuable recordings, particularly of Gamelan Angklung which are not as common find. The liner notes are expertly written.
