notes

In a world where songs are produced like in the fast food industry (Lots of fat, with no fatty lyrics, music, or arrangements) comes a compilation in Lebanon from outside the traditional menu.

Munir Khauli, Tanin el Tarab, is considered the godfather of the Lebanese alternative music scene. A great guitarist and a great songwriter, his music influenced a lot of Lebanese artists and many tried to pickpocket his unique style. In his song “motirbin” Munir describes exactly the current Lebanese music scene. “The nation is now filled with stars, And in the sky there are only clouds”. All Munir’s songs in this compilation were recorded in the nineties, yet two of them were been written in 1986 and 1989.

The Quiminboos is a Lebanese band that was extremely famous in the late eighties especially in night clubs and universities. The band members (with a top secret identities) write original songs not similar to any other Lebanese or international artist. The lyrics are unbelievably Lebanese (even when they sing in English) and unbelievably unbelievable. In their song “Antarah” the Quiminboos do state
“nfizir ghanni la Fairuz, 7aji ba2a maskhara”.
All the songs selected from the quiminboos' vintage were written and recorded in the late eighties.

Zena Daccache is a famous Lebanese actress. Although she is not a singer, her album’s performance and her voice are in the top list of the most authentic performances I ever heard (unlike many others who claim to be talented singer). All her songs were written and arranged by Nadim Bou Khalil. Nadim is a Lebanese poet, composer and a songwriter. His songs are original, clever, and fun to listen to. With his unique arrangement style, his music is easy to be recognized. In his song “el ti2lid” Nadim talks about today’s song-cloning machines.
All the songs by Nadim and Zeina were recorded in the last 3 years.

“Meen” is a new Lebanese talent. Meen were founded by the two brothers Fouad and Toni Yammine. Fouad is an actor, Toni is an E-consultant. Together, they’ve been writing Lebanese songs for a while now. Lately they decided it is time to publish and they are recording their first album.
Fouad and Toni wrote “Nashid l Banadoura”. This song, that gives his name to the compilation, is a straight invitation to an artistic revolution. It is time to take a banadoura and to throw it on unauthentic artists. “Banadoura… Sle7ak bi idak sar”.

  • Great CD

I Like this album; it is fresh and interesting and unpretentious. It is also good that it is not a pop-mainstream variety of the trash music going on in Beirut and on the videoclips.

This review is simply taken from an email I exchanged with Toni Yammine: First time I heard of the Banadoura compilation was when by pure luck I visited the banadoura.com (Fun site by the way). That was before the CD got released. I ordered two of them and gave one to my sister. I listened to it while driving back home from work and was laughing out loud al the way. I really enjoyed all of the songs. It is hard to say which one I enjoyed most. Zeina Daccache is very good, as well as The Quiminboos (I have no clue how to pronounce it). The Banadoura anthem is very nice also. The song that made me laugh the most is 'The big one'!!! 'Zit Basleh' is great too. ... I never knew that such Lebanese songs existed. I am no fan at all of the fast-food-like arabic/Lebanese songs. Sometimes I listen to a few classics. Living here I am not very exposed to Lebanese music. This CD is like our revenge on all the cheap/tasteless/astisticless/talentless/clueless singers and songs that we get bombarded with. A slap in their face. ... I hope there will be a Banadoura Compilation 2 in the future. Maybe include 2 CDs in it?
