One of the great singers as dominant as ever.

It is sad and mystifying that the great Barbara Lea has had to release this CD privately to get it into the market place.Lea is one of the truly giant figures on the postwar popular music scene. Ever since the appearance in 1957 of her debut disc Lea/In Love she has been a name to be reckoned with. And my goodness, she still is. The Melody Lingers On is dedicated to the memory of Roy Hemming, and this dedication has drawn the attention of UK collectors like me to the books of this admirable archivist of the showbiz world, who is not as well-known over here as he should be. And the disc itself, very well presented and recorded, reminds us that Barbara Lea, musicologist, adviser and friend of singers, is still at the top herself. But why one of the busy little labels that work so hard in this field didn't snap this up baffles me. Private releases can have short print runs. Buy it now.

Exquisite-LEA executed

This CD is proof positive that popular song has no better friend than Barbara Lea. In an instantly recognizable dusky alto -- warm and controlled -- she finds the heart of each of the generous 20 movie songs, ever respectful of both lyric and melody while making each gem her own. From the lesser known songs such as a jaunty "Stanley Steamer" to standards like "Begin The Beguine", breathtakingly reinvented and slowed down, Lea sails confidently through a wonderful mix of songs with her honest, direct yet sophisticated approach. Other highlights -- on a CD of all highlights -- include a romantic "The Music Stopped" (showcasing the talents of pianist Wes McAfee), an appropriately world weary "Ten Cents A Dance", a lush "Call Me Irresponsible" with little known verse, a hilarious "Monkee Doodle Doo", an infectious "A Rainy Night In Rio" and the haunting final track, "The Song Is Ended" which gives the CD its title, " the melody lingers on".... one listen to this CD and you'll agree.
